How do you combat your phone not being entirely parallel to the part and the smartphone "bubble" from their lenses

    It does happen.

That's where my physically measured dimensions come into play.

Here's a great example of what you described -

    Screenshot 2025-02-20 092618.png

So, while tracing it doesn't make it a perfect 1:1 due to the sort of fish eye lens...I use my measurements obtained.

I'll be cutting this part out later when I put the kid down for a nap so we'll see how it comes out.

While you're over here drawing useless bullshit I've come up with something truly necessary to survive the current times we live in.

To add to that, the part is actually incorrect from the seller.

I texted the customer and asked what the center-to-center hole distance should be, because like I was showing Kira yesterday, this plasma cut part is shotty AF.

The holes are badly beveled, and oblong and ugly as hell.

Customer told me he's paying $12.50 per part. I had quoted him $8 per part and my parts come in better.

Example, the radius on the top edge looks like it was drawn with a spline. That's if you ignore the oblong hole in front of you.

    20250219_184425.jpg

And here's my repro using a tangent arc, and proper lead in/out for a clean circular hole -

    20250219_184432.jpg

Anyway, going back to that second part I need to cut today. The important thing to note is the center-to-center hole distance measured at 2.53". The holes are for an M6 bolt (0.23" diameter hole) however the holes were intentionally cut at 0.35" to "make it work". Not only that, the customer's response was that the hole distance needs to be 2.48".

    Untitled4.jpg

I think making larger, nasty holes to make up for a lack of tolerance a customer asks for is shotty work.

I hope this helps answer your question!

An M6 fastener is holding a brake? That is frightening. But yeah that cutter definitely has something wrong, looks like an axis was stuttering. I know the cost is probably insane but ballscrews would be nice on one of those.

It's exactly what I was thinking, a coupler that's loose or something.

Then I found the seller's page and site - dude has the same plasma cutter as I do, but running the exact table I want!

An STV Pro, and it uses planetary gears on the servo motors and the whole thing runs on a rack and pinion setup.

In theory, he should be getting better cuts than me without trying compared to my cheesy Chinese table :anonymous:

    @Bandido

Since we're on the subject of modeling/drawing, do you plan to buy some sort of scanner to capture your vehicle's contours for doing your panels?

We had some guys come out to scan for one of my projects so they can detail all the piping in CAD for prefab of alot of the the pipe so we have minimal field welding.

was pretty cool to see the piping all done in CAD and was able to identify multiple problems before we actually built the stuff

    That's freaking cool

Do you recall what they used? I see more and more of these tools hitting the market that are becoming more and more affordable

Don’t remember but it made a 3d rendering of the whole area and they just inserted the piping

Hit double digit snowfall for the fifth time since 1947 when they started keeping track.
Chose not to drive around in the slop because I don't wanna clean under the truck, just been walking around the beach a bit getting winded haha.

It's crazy how much snow you guys are getting. Meanwhile over here it's going to be mid 60s in Tahoe this weekend.
