Thinking about replacing a wheel bearing while I got the spindles out, had one replaced a few months ago and it is very noticeable how much rougher the old one is in comparison..

Thinking of calling around for some shops that'll just press it out and in real quick while the spindles are out, do I need just the main bearing or do I need to get basically everything behind the hub shown in this diagram

Good on you if you find a shop that does reliable press work. The one time I tried that I ended up buying new UCAs and redoing the work myself, only after being called an entitled millennial when I told the mechanic I was unhappy with the work and asked him to make it right.

How dare you have standards for professional work! I don't like using broad terms like "unskilled labor" as a paintbrush since it is false justification to pay someone less based on an opinion. But I absolutely will use it in specific cases, and unfortunately you found some unskilled labor.

We came to an agreement in which he refunded my money and I never set foot in his shop again.

I'm not sure which shops here employ the skilled labor. The ones that looked most promising have all closed over the past few years. Even the well-regarded vintage Toyota specialist in town was a disappointment when I took my truck in there.

It should be, as long as you find the shop that employs "skilled labor". If you do find that shop, keep a good relationship with them.

On the topic of front end stuff and things.. I’m gonna tackle my LCA bushings since I’ve got to replace a worn inner tie rod and I won’t likely have that clear access to the cam adjusters again anytime soon.

In Y’all’s experience is it enough of a pain in the ass to get the old ones out that you bought new ones with sleeves or were you able to get the old rubber out without wanting to kill yourself? I’ve heard great things about energy suspension bushings but I’m not very enthusiastic about trying to re-use the sleeves.

I just did mine this weekend, wasn't horrible if you use the bottle-jack method. Heated the hell out of it and they popped right out. I put in new rubber ones with sleeves. If you go the energy/strongflex route I think you just literally burn the rubber out and leave the sleeves and pop the new poly bushings in. That seems 'easier' to me, but pressing the whole thing out wasn't terrible

you’re saying not even popping the whole enchilada out of the control arm, just melting the rubber out of the old sleeve while it’s still inside? Sounds tremendous.

I removed my OE-type (can't say for sure if they were original) bushings and replaced them with Whitelines using a hydraulic bottle jack. It felt a little sketchy but wasn't horrible.

Difficulty will depend a lot on the condition of your truck. Mine is exceptionally uncrusty. Even my LCA cams came out without a fight. A crusty truck could easily tip the scales toward loaded arms. We bought loaded arms to keep things simple when we did the front end on my friend's 4Runner.

The place I still has 4.9 stars on Google, so it's maybe not actually as bad as my experience, or maybe people are more naiive/less picky than I was. Or the reviews just aren't a good representation of reality, that's always possible too.

One of my Dad's favorite saying is "inspect what you expect" but see the catch there is it is reliant on a modicum of knowledge in the area... Not everyone has that when it comes to cars and they just take the customer service parts as the whole experience

Heh, lucky you  I pulled the trigger on new cam tabs in case the worst should happen. Slow as I is, I’m starting to learn the ache of buying the part is far less than the sorrow of having the old one break on you when you aren’t prepared
    :spending:

    What are loaded arms?

Actually after digging into that more, its just Energy that you burn out and reuse the old outer sleeve. Strongflex you press everything out as you would with oem style.

I'm sure he just means he bought new control arms with bushings already installed to avoid the hassle
