A corrections officer just sent out an email looking to see if anyone here had a spare filing cabinet they could relocate to his office and attached a picture of the size he is looking for to the email... this is all pretty standard stuff but I noticed the picture attached was a .jfif . Now I am trying to figure out how this man managed to create a .jfif image, a standard that isn't widely used and was introduced in 1991, in this most modern of eras. Like seriously non-tech people can manage to do the weirdest tech things.

maybe grabbed it off google image search? I notice sometimes when doing that I get some funky file formats

My favorite so far at my job - the time I sent a screenshot of our website to one of our (clothing) designers asking why certain images weren't up; they were up, she just didn't know how to work the search feature.

So I screenshot and send her the proof. She emails me back saying the website is broken because none of the links are working. She was trying to click on links in the screenshot.

Like seriously, how do some people get this far in life

No that's the part that irks me, like I'd get if he ended up with a .png or even a .webp or something. But this is a picture from inside the institution, in fact I pass the very cabinet in question most days. He generated this image somehow and I'm at a loss for how. My only wild guess is that it is actually a weird but common format originally like maybe a .tiff or a .webp and putting it into Microsoft Exchange for the email converted it before it was sent... I could see MS using a weird old format because it was somehow cheap or free from some sort of licensure.

Maybe he took the picture on his Sony Mavica?

(I know Mavicas wrote regular ol jpg, but I like the idea of this person using a 30-year-old digital camera with a floppy disc)

That is weird, I work with a variety of image formats every day and I have to admit I've never heard of a jfif file myself

It's because it is ancient, maybe if you were doing this job back in 1992 or some sort of large format printing until 1996 or so you'd have seen one but otherwise it is just a remnant of the past that takes no effort to continue to support since all of the JPEG compression decoding software can parse it natively. I'd guess an alphabetization action error caused it to become the default save option in Win11.

I haven't thought about it in a long time but I may have just used WordPad way back when.
I wish I saved all my old machines.

High roller over here. I dig the colored spokes for a build like that. What are you riding nowadays?
