Yeah I can understand that plus he'd be towing. Final drive gearing is about the same for 4cyl & 6cyl, just he won't have the power of the 6cyl.

I could understand gearing lower to help compensate but his RPMs will be higher than what he might be comfortable with, I don't know his style. And if towing long distances like he's planning that high RPM will kill his fuel economy.

If he was just using the truck for offroading, which we know will never happen, lol, I"d say the 4.88 would be good for 32s. But for commuting I think 4.88 is too low.

I just don't remember anyone going 4.88 with 32s. Most people with 32s don't even bother regearing, I didn't either.

lol my power pulls with the SC are usually going WOT on a freeway on ramp or when passing someone, when I'm already in 2nd or 3rd gear. I worry about my clutch doing it from a stop because it has no bite to it (for lack of a better term)...I have to feather it from a stop most times to get it rolling. I always figured it was the shitty stock clutch being too light duty for the weight I've added.

I admit I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to my rig...I probably don't push it half as hard as I think I do but hopefully that will result in a longer lifespan with it. Although I think I probably cancel that out in other ways when it gets beat on offroad. Who really knows....it could get totaled by some teen on a cell phone tomorrow for all I know *knocks on wood*

Again 2500 at 70mph with 4.88, with his current setup. That's only 150rpm higher than my truck with 4.10s and a manual trans and 33s.

The engine is plenty stout and will happily rev way out for you. Sounds like you clutch blows and that's probably not helped by bigger tires and stock gears either.

Really? That don't sound right. I don't think my truck is even that low with 33s, 4.88, & calibrated speedo. I'll see today when I go home.

Is your speedo calibrated? With 4.10s & 33s your speedo will read slower than actual.

yeah I had a major clutch fiasco back when I first got this truck....long story short, I bought a URD Competition Stage 2 clutch to put in it because I got sick of the TOB chirp on the stock one. Shop that installed the URD clutch put it in backward, was toast within a week or so, I needed my truck drivable ASAP so I made a huge mistake that I'm still paying off and took it Toyota where they bent me over on a stock clutch. That whole mess happened almost 2 years ago to this day, and the damn TOB has been chirping again for about a year lol.

Someday I'll attempt a performance series clutch again but this one still works well enough for the time being

that was all before I had any ability or experience with working on my truck myself, I think I had a 20 piece tool kit to my name back then. Next time I'll be attempting the install myself with help from a friend.

Yes and I did all the calculations with size and gear ratios and you can too at grimmjeeper.com the 4 speed auto is a power slaying device so the 4cyl just struggles behind it eternally if it isn't given some advantage. Look at the ratios of the a340 they don't hardly let the 4cyl ever tach up which it needs to do to move itself. RPM is not your enemy people, this isn't the 1960s where poorly balanced engines wing apart at 4000rpm. Our shit can rev and it needs to.

I have one from a 1999 PreRunner, but I bought it for the 5-Lug. I told @Empty_Lord I would put the interior back together so I'll keep on my word.

I have one green one, the only thing that makes it orange is a little orange condom Toyota slips on the bulb. I've never installed one, but it seems relatively easy.

Oh that's a good deal, about $600 and you get the master rebuild kit, right?

I don't disagree, the engine will be happy to rev for him. If power is all he cares about & not so much a balance between power & fuel economy being that he's planning on driving to numerous states than go 4.88.

1st gens have been around for a while, while caluclators are great & the good ones don't lie but I also trust people's real world experience. Not common for people to go that low of a gear with 32s for a truck still used for commuting/highway.

But heck, what do I know, I don't know what he's looking for exactly regearing.
