@zero4, you ever heard of people smoothing alum pitting out with a skim coat of JB weld and then sanding that flat?

Not really but I have done something similar myself. I filled a small void on a piece of cast iron by mixing cast iron chips with epoxy & machined over it. Could totally tell where the void was but the void was gone.

Like would you be leaving it as bare alumn finish or painting over? If painting over should be fine I would think.

On second thought if the pits are really small I'm not sure how well the jb weld would hold up. Generally you should rough up the surface for epoxies but if leaving bare finish that would probably make it look worse opening up those pits.

It's really small, from electrolysis, but I think it may interfere with a gasket sealing

I'm assuming it's an engine part? If it affects sealing I'm not sure if it's a good idea if under high heat. Like on the cylinder head surface if close to the combustion chamber or exhaust ports might not be a good idea. But intake manifold or water pump I'd probably try it.

Alumn oxides fast & needs bite for the epoxy to hold so I'd clean up & slightly enlarge the pit with a carbide burr or grinding stone if possible. I'd try the regular JB weld, JB kwik is not as strong.

Oh in that case, that doesn't look too bad. I wouldn't even try filling in those pits. It would probably seal ok but I would add gray rtv, honda bond, or yamabond to those areas & call it a day.

It's actually not uncommon to add some rtv to intake, oil, & water gaskets. I used to add it around coolant ports on intake manifolds even on new gaskets & good mating surfaces for insurance. I've always prefered the grey permatex or honda bond.

How's the build coming along, close to firing up the engine yet?
