Yeah I just don't want to put holes in my bed rail for something I'm going to use for a month or two...

Yeah I wouldn't sweat drilling the bed rails...it's hardly noticeable really and I'd feel better knowing the rack was bolted down rather than clamped (our however the non-bolted ones do it) when offroading and such.

Are you getting a custom rack built? How will it mount to the bed? I almost went the custom route with a local fabricator out here but ended up finding this Avid one on TW for cheap in the Arizona BS thread and got it TW expressed to me

Yeah I have a good friend that's going to help me build a rack that will bolt to the bed rails. I just have to wait until May for that and my tent should be here in a week or two and I have a couple trips planned for late-March, early-April. I'm totally ok with drilling into the bed rails, I just don't want to drill holes in my bed rail for a temporary setup.

One of the few things I'm jealous of about 2nd/3rd gens is their bed rail system :anonymous:

Those hardshell RTT's has to be better when it comes to moisture. What model is that?

Also, that cabinet placement is ridiculous.

I haven't had any issues with moisture with my soft RTT as long you use the cover it comes with. But the soft ones are more time consuming to set up I think, I haven't seen a hard shell one in person but they look easier to setup and take down

I like the hardshell ones for the Aerodynamic factor. You could mount it parallel with the roofline.

You can do that with a regular one too lol, minutes parallel to the roof line. That's more to do with the height of the rack you're using to mount it on. But yeah they do look more sleek, probably lighter too

You could, but that would kill your fuel economy.

    You've essentially created a sail.

I'm lost...were taking about mounting RTTs level with cab/roof line yeah?

Yeah, so the bottom of the RTT is level with the roofline. My reasoning is the hardshell RTT creates less drag than a traditional RTT.

Ah ok I was thinking keeping the top of the tent level with the roof line, like mine is.
Yeah if you want to retain more bed space and have a taller bed rack, the hard shell design would be a better way to go

As much as I would love an RTT, I have no remote idea where I'd even store it.

I'll probably buy a teardrop trailer door and inset it within the swing-out trailer door and make it half cargo trailer half camper.

Just keep it mounted to the truck full time like the rest of us lazy folk do

Seriously though they're heavy and awkward AF to mount/unmount unless you have a garage and a pulley system rigged up, I just keep mine on for that reason. Also...nowhere to store it

Yeah, think my parents would kill me if I hung that above the Tesla. Haha.

Or I'll go full retard and hang it from the ceiling of my cargo trailer.

Yeah I’ve got a pretty good spot above my truck to store my setup when I get around to building a pulley system
