That's ghetto stuff though... a clean V8 exhaust note shouldn't be illegal... On my dad's truck we cut the muffler out and on my Mustang I plan to go cat-less midpipe with an SLP Loudmouth catback.... It'll be like the H pipe one below

Well I've searched the internet so I'll ask y'all for fun cause why not. Decided on a whim to do a leak down test on the Z. Good news is no air leaks to the coolant passages. I get some past the rings which is to be expected on a fairly dry engine that has 194k on the clock. But i also get a bit out if the exhaust runner as well. Not so concerned with the amount since ideally that one should be none. Anyone think this may be just because it hasn't run at all yet and the heads are freshly rebuilt

Kinda normal for fresh heads with valves that haven’t seated

So probably wise to just keep assembling, run it a bit and if there's a running problem do the test then?

Run the test after it’s warmed up. Let it heat cycle at least once too.

Leak downs are ment to be done warm. Cold isn’t as accurate because the engine won’t be as sealed as when it’s warm

My Corollas cold leak down is roughly 20% in all 4 cylinder. When warm is 4-6%

Gotcha. It feels like it has good compression and it's only past 70psi that I can hear any exhaust leakage. I have one cyl that when I'm turning it over by hand I can hear it hiss out the intake, but that's probably sorta common too given the heads are fresh?

Your probably hearing it suck air in. Turning it over by hand will make hissing if the engines healthy

As long as your valve clearances are all good I would t worry about anything

Hydraulic adjusters, so nothing to clearance. The only reason I mentioned the one hissing or sucking is because the engine is slightly easier to turn then, and it doesn't happen at any other time in the rest of the two turns of the crank

That’s normal for an engine. They get easy at certain parts because of the pressure from the valve springs on the cam.
