but I have a tow rig and an econobox for my soon to be 110 mi round trip commute so if I couldn't register the tacoma it won't really be a huge deal. Would be nice to keep it registered for driving around in moab/junktown without getting hassled by the cops though

The old Toyota ECUs don't report date codes... They'd have to physically compare part numbers

they would probably figure it out because my truck is OBD2 and my 1UZ is OBD1. Not sure if I could mock up the 5VZ ecu to act like it's working while it's hooked up to the emissions monitor

Ah, that's true it would be wise to use the computer from a newer LS400 or something. My Tacoma has a 95 ECU and emissions equip and it's in a 96 body. Didn't effect emissions testing, they scanned the vin barcode, read the OBDII and off I went with a clean bill of health. I thought it was interesting though because usually on my 95 they would sniff test it, my guess is because it was technically before OBDII was required, even though it had it.

    I think there are enough differences between the OBD1 and OBD2 motors that I'd have to source a whole OBD2 donor...not that that's a PITA...but I have this 93 SC400 in my driveway :)

If the case has to come out he likely means the t-case input seal. The case has three shaft seals and that one rarely goes bad, good time to do the transmission output seal too.

If you're vomiting out of every orifice at once, sitting on the toilet with a trash can in front of you is more efficient...food poisoning taught me that

I don't know what I want to do. I want something on 35s with enough grunt to haul around my fat ass, 2 dogs, a full cooler and maybe a couple passengers.

The 85 4runner I have has a bubba 4 link and is bobbed. It would be a pretty decent rock bouncer with the 1uz in it but definitely wouldn't be much to look at between the bob and rust.

The clean 85 I was gonna buy would be a lot more work to get up to par but has mint paint and a professional cage in it.

My Tacoma needs a lot of love and wouldn't be emissions legal with the 1UZ. Doing the SAS would be alright but that and the engine swap is a lot of work

Buying a 4 door Wrangler with a blown engine and doing a modern V8 swap sounds good too

Anyone on here taken apart the slip yoke to grease it by hand? Gonna try and tackle that as the metal "TING" every time I accelerate is getting on my nerves...any special tools needed? Haven't really crawled under yet to look at what it might involve but gonna take a look tonight.

I'd mark the a straight line going between the two halves of shaft so you can line it up correctly when reassembling. Then I'd drop on end of drive shaft, inspect splines, make sure not too ragged looking and then load up the grease by hand all over the splines and opposite. Reassemble and when you get it back installed, before you drive it, push the ball in on the little zerk fitting with corner of small flat screwdriver of something. The idea is to relieve any hydraulic pressure or load that may be excessive on the output and input bearings of transfer and diff. Maybe drive over a couple cyurbs around the block and then relieve the pressure through the ball in zerk again. If it's too much grease it will ooze out of the zerk(assuming zerk isn't plugged up with grime)
