@Empty_Lord are the tweets wired in series like they appear to be on the 2nd gens? I read that unplugging them may cause the other speakers to not work.

 

They’re wired in series with the speakers. They don’t have their own module like aftermarket units.

So if I just wanna run coax speakers up front instead of the component setup, Ill have to disconnect the tweets and reconnect the wires using splices?

 

I would disconnect the stock tweeters and run my own independent tweeters and modules. Stock system is no good.

 

Problem is, there isn't really any tweeters that can mount in the stock location on the 04 door panel. I was gonna disconnect the tweeters altogether, then run 2 way speakers instead front and rear.

What I've seen people do is ditch the stock tweeters, or leave them alone. The 3rd Gen 4Runner tweeter sail panels are a popular upgrade. I've sold a lot of those panels.

 

Wont happen without power mirrors.

You can fit aftermarket tweeters in the stock spot, I've seen plenty of people who have done it. Some tweets come with a housing and grille for it.

 

Links? From what Ive read, its not really doable without a lot of modification, since pretty much all aftermarket tweeters are surface mounted. I want to utilize the factory speaker grille

 

I have one.

It makes a big difference, but it's really not impressive.

 

If you want to use the stock tweeter grille it's a lot more trouble. Didn't @Sperrunner post a picture of Kenwood tweeters behind the stock grille?

Most of the setups I know use the flush mount or the aftermarket grille.
