I see. So al you really needed was the body on that truck?

I’m curious, what did you do with the old engine and drivetrain?

VIN Wise - how did that go? Did you swap plates?

Well I was storing lots of it outside kinda close to the street so some of it went missing mysteriously. Remember I was gonna send you some parts for your swap since all of it was exactly what you needed. I ended up losing the auto tcase, DSes, a shifter linkage and something else. But the rest of it was heavy stuff like the engine and trans which I sold for a whopping $100 so a dude could have it to put in an 1983 Toyota Pickup. Luckily I kept all of the stuff I actually needed in a garage or this could have gone south real fast. Still surprised they took that worth less tcase, it was heavy and really it is worthless.

I assume so, don't have any cameras or anything. It's possible the garbage guys thought they were supposed to take it, it was all pretty close to where the cans were supposed to be. The engine and trans were in the bed of the truck, and actually all the other little stuff like various airbox pieces and evap stuff in the truck bed was still there.

    Damn.

What about the whole VIN and title situation? Did you transfer the vin plates from your old truck, or did you use the registration from the donor truck?

Nope, transferred the title of the green truck to the wrecking company that took it away (with all of my scrap and trash in the bed haha). I titled and registered the grey truck in my name after I finished the swap. Since it is a 96 they just hooked up to the old ass 95 ECU OBDII port and made sure all of the emissions readiness monitors are set. My truck is fully electrically OBDII compliant but it doesn't have any of the OBDII emissions equip of the 96+ trucks so it is basically a loophole to have zero emissions equip and still be legal. The only thing my ECU checks for is O2 readiness and CAT stability. The 96+ also checked the EVAP system and fuel tank pressure. So my dumb old 95 ECU can say "hurr durr we're 100% good here" even though it doesn't meet the emissions requirements for a 1996 vehicle. There's no way for them to confirm that though since they just want everything it has to be ready, they don't check to make sure it supports all the things it should support for that year.

So your old truck was a 1995 pre-OBDII, and the 1996 is OBDII compliant?

I am aware how useful the throttle is. Ramping up the R's and keeping them there is pretty useful in many applications.

I just wanted to know if there was truly that much of voltage swing just running the power windows. I've come to not even use my factory gauges much. I have SCII's in all my vehicles.

My truck was a 1995 model year, by then Toyota was already implementing OBDII diagnostics routines and subroutine error checking and correction into the ECUs but you gotta remember 1996 was the official year OBDII was required and had to monitor certain values for emissions. My truck in 1995 didn't have to meet any of that emissions stuff so the ECU even though it is electrically OBDII compliant doesn't monitor any of that stuff because it just plain wasn't required too. So my truck was always sniffer tested and no one would plug into it because as a 95 they didn't expect it to have a port anyway. But as a 1996 they plugged into it instead of the sniffer, still passed because its two monitors were good and the machine only tests for failed or not ready monitors. ECUs made after ODBII was introduced as an electrical standard are so much smarter (you'd love the quirkiness of my cruisers OBDI computer) so I'm glad my Taco has one and my specific year is the one to have because it only requires an O2 after the cat... that's it, that's the extent of my emissions equip. But it can still self diagnose and correct minor issues way better than OBDI (TCCS EFI) like my cruiser has. If I tried to explain the way certain things act on OBDI Toyotas it would make you question everything you've learned about how yours acts now and what influences it.

My cruiser is a 93 so I can't use a SG or a UG, but I love my UG in the Tacoma

Wow that looks amazing, I don't remember your screen name but now that I see pictures I think I may have read through one of your trip reports a long time ago

Monte and Ben typically write up reports and such, I take some pictures but even then it is mostly them. I like to go along for the wheeling and hanging out with my friends that I don't see very much, not much into editing the photos and writing up a story afterwards although I enjoy looking at both haha. That's probably why most people don't realize that's me in a lot of the various trip reports/pics over the years. Those pictures are all Ben's haha although I have some somewhere too.

I'm just scrambling to make it to the next one at this point. Two trips coming up in a row with less than a month separating them. One for 6 days and one for 2 weeks. I'm hoping the truck is ready for that much dirt and camping.

Man that's my goal, I've done my fair share of camping out of my truck, but actually going on longer trips with multiple camp spots along the way, and some wheeling in between, that's what it's all about to me

It's fun man, it really is. It's made me into a world class campsite dismantler too haha. The next trip for me is some of my favorite wheeling places but it's two states away so even getting there will be a camping day too haha. But hopefully you'll get the opportunity to do trips like that as well, maybe for the WA trip I'm now planning haha
