@Empty_Lord @Speedytech7 @CS_AR So assuming the 92 will be sold after the headgasket job is done, is it worth it to pay extra for the LCE gasket set, or get the Fel-Pro kit from Napa? ($60 cheaper).

Wire cup on a grinder will be your best friend. I love FC for home projects, a quality wire will perform way better than the junk you get at HF or the cheaper Hobart stuff at Tractor supply. Wouldnt want to use it all the time at work unless it was dual shield.

Unless you're building an LS, it's safe to assume a Fel-Pro HG is always the absolute wrong choice. But LCE is also a rip off, you don't need a cometic MLS gasket, lemme find a better kit.

    I was looking at this
    https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FPB...inder+Head+Gasket+Set&keywordInput=headgasket

    Or this
    https://www.lceperformance.com/22R-22RE-Complete-Gasket-Set-1985-1995-p/1016033.htm

This looks like LCE rebadging a felpro kit since their blue.
    https://www.lceperformance.com/Head-Gasket-Set-22R-RE-85-95-p/1024051.htm

I dont plan on removing the timing cover or chain or anything related to it since it was done 35k miles ago. So any kit with those gaskets is just extra stuff that wont be used.

If you shop at Napa I guarantee you can find a Mahle kit marked up to 100+ if that makes you feel better. I find parts priced appropriately, only reason I'd pay more than $60 ever for a kit on an engine this common place is if it was from toyota themselves. You'll need head bolts too, they're torque to yield, and if the last guy didn't change em or have the head and block check that's probably why it blew.

I do plan on getting a set of head bolts. Im sitting here looking at the ticket from when Toyota did this job 4 years ago. Head bolts were replaced. We knew they botched the job, they had to do it twice. I think they screwed up, realized they were pressed to make book time, and half assed it the second time. When we got the truck back their was coolant splatter on everything, just looked very unproffesional. When the water pump was done 2 years ago, the tech noticed some stuff done wrong during the HG job and fixed them, or so we thought. All in all, this experience is a huge reason as to why one should never utilize a dealer for large service jobs. A HG shouldnt last only 40k miles for people that drive like a grandma and baby the truck.

man 5.5 hours one way is a stretch too long for a 3 day weekend trip...fuck I'm tired of driving. Hardly slept at all last night in the RTT because the winds were 30mph strong all night.

I stopped by a Napa store and bought a needle fitting for my grease gun and some CV axle grease, pumped some into the hole in the boot and patched it up best I could with rubber cement...it actually held for the weekend suprisingly. Started leaking again on the 5hr drive home of course but it got us through the trail and our camping trip at least.

I'm done with shitty parts store axles, gonna just take the $$$ plunge and buy the full on CVJ remans with the orange boots and hope I don't have to deal with it again for a long time

Still not fed up enough to spend $400+ ea on new OEM ones though lol

I see now that Mahle kit is on wholesale closeout. Normal price is $62. That makes more sense.

    Few photos from this weekend

Not a particular hard trail but some narrow climbs and sharp ass switchbacks, sizable rocks pretty typical of the eastern Sierras. Lakes were at about 10k ft elevation

Mahle makes victor reinz, so that's my stance haha. If you can find a victor gasket kit for this engine it'll come in a box that says Mahle Original / Victor Reinz

Mahle, Victor Reinz, Clevite, and Dana Gasket and Bearing (for a little while at least) are the same company

Aight guess Ill go Mahle. Cant justify paying double for a gasket set from Toyota when we may not keep the truck very long after the job is done.

I attempted to....for probably 6 hours total lol. Didn't catch anything, didn't even see any signs of any fish in the lake. I did see a swimming mouse though, and I had no idea mice could swim.
