Ive been debating the idea of refurbishing my seats to some nice leather/vinyl, however i was thinking if its possible to just buy seats (double cab) from the 2nd gen to transfer onto the 1st gen. I want that just because i also have the 2017 tacoma and the side bolsters on those truck seats are great!! the side bolstering of the first gen seats are lacking heavily. Or if any other seats can just fit right in, thank you!

The only zero modification direct bolt on seats are from other 1st gen Tacomas (not even 3rd gen 4runners are a perfect match). The only minor exception is some aftermarket seat companies make a rail you buy in addition to their seats that would bolt up, but no OEM or other car manufacturers seat will directly bolt on without some decent work.

I reupholstered mine with leather. I used a fairly think leather, the kind of stuff you would use for chaps. I just cut the original cover apart at the seams and used it as a pattern. Used some memory foam to give it a little better lumbar support and to beef up the bolsters. I'm pretty happy with it. Comfortable and will probably last the life of the truck.

I don't mind going the route of buying rails, just wanted to avoid any fab work since i don't really have the tools or experience, thank you, ill definitely look into buy seats with rails

that looks really nice, I'm for sure going for dark brown leather on mine, how long did that one seat take you? that was an idea i had instead of paying to have it done, i just am worried about how long it would take me with my sewing machine

No worries! I was really looking at some Corbeau Baja XRS seats. Just can’t drop around the $1k for both front seats/rails.

If you want factory seats with leather there is a group buy going on (it’s been going on for a long while), and those look phenomenal.

There is no seat on the market that will bolt up to your truck without some kind of modification or fabrication. Aftermarket seats with rails like Corbeau can go upwards of $1,200.

Another option similar to what I did in my 2nd gen is buy yourself some seat rails from Planted. They have a universal platform but vehicle specific mounting legs. Then buy yourself whatever seats you want, wether OEM or whatever, remove the stock mounting legs, and if they are riveted to those seat’s rails then the better.

Use those drilled out rivet holes as a pattern to drill the Planted bracket, put yourself some appropriate strength bolts through and there you go. And your stock belt buckle receptor can just be transferred over.

I have FRS seats mounted on Planted brackets.

Really?! It really is that easy?! Can't believe I've never seen these. Sounds freaking awesome man, I've had a hard time finding seats to replace my 60/4) bench due to dreading having to fab, etc so I've been waiting around for some taco buckets but this opens up many many more options. Thanks for sharing!

How are the FRS seats for height? I currently have CRV seats on Corbeau bases and they sit too high for me.

On the Planted brackets I have, the FRS seat ends up approximately 2” lower than my TRD seats in my 2nd gen at lowest setting. The driver FRS seat then has manual height adjustment and can be set back to stock height, maybe slightly higher.

Edit: post #31 in my thread shows my rough measurements from the floor.

If yours is a double cab, your options are much better as to finding salvage yard seats, since you would not need to have a seat back the comes forward. This is a stopping point for those with extended cab. By the way, I am pleased to death with the BMW 328i power, heated, lumbar leathers that I installed. Wiring was the bitch to that, for the driver seat, as it had memory functions that actually tied back to the main vehicle. I wound up rewiring with a switch for the passenger side. Only have about $300 in them. Made my own brackets, but must say that universal mount might have been the trick!!!

As much as I love my Scion TC seats (which are like 500 times better than the factory ones), I which you lived closer to hire you to install those Beemer seats in my Taco!

Was there much fab work involved in getting the Tc seats to fit? How are they on height?

Quite a bit of welding, actually. Lucky for me, the guy I hired to do the install, got me a HUGE break, is an excellent welder and a creative builder.

There's a write up for Schion XB seats, and I got confused... But the TC seats swivel, so that worked out well. But it is not a project for those who are just getting started in welding!

I have a set of these standard width seats in my truck. They fit in the cab a little snug but are okay. The issue I had was that I wear size 38 pants and the seat bolster squeeze the butt cheeks pretty tight. At first it I just got sore. Later numbness set in but thought the seat would break in. Later my sciatica nerves had enough and could barely walk for a few weeks. An upholstery shop took out some foam from the bolsters and now the seats are much better that stock. Something to consider.
