What surprised me most about this 2.7 engine is that it is listed at 150 HP. That is a pretty darn powerful 4 banger!

That is the same HP as the second gen 4Runner 3.0 V6.

For perspective, the listed HP for the famous 22RE 4 cylinders, was 78-84 HP, depending on the year.

300k on my 97 4x4 5spd, still going strong. Pacesetter long tube header, flowmaster exhaust and k&n filter and I still average 22-24mpg daily driving on 33"s.

I had a 2002 with the 2.7l in the same ext cab 4x4 and a 2003 2wd single cab 2.4l. I lifted the 2003 single cab 3" and put bigger tires. It was the most fun and most memories i ever made in my vehicles. I took it everywhere and NEVER got stuck. Both were good rigs, but I felt my 2003 was far better due to the power to weight ratio and the fact it had ABS, however less room. Anything prior to 2003 did not have ABS. The 2002 did lock the brakes on me once in the snow going down a hill (through an intersection)... Luckily nobody was in the intersection, so i basically was sledding through the intersection until the road flattened and the brakes unlocked. All in all the older trucks are awesome and I wish I never sold my single cab, it never had ANY issues and started the first time every time.

Oh and I was able to pull 178hp out of my 2.4l with some minor mods (intake, exhaust, plugs, throttle body, etc.) and could break them free in 2nd gear

I'd say so considering, my dad has one with over 450,000 miles on it. And it still runs great. The A/C finally went out on it though...
