Cold, dense air needs more fuel to maintain the correct mixture. It produces more power than hotter, less dense air. This is the basis for all types of air induction power adders, ie. Turbo, supercharger, ram air, cai. More air and more fuel = more power. Add an intercooler to turbo and supercharger, you get even more power since the air is cooler.

Are you with me? I can't do the math anymore to prove the point, but it can be done.

I always fill with 6 qts. of full synthetic and I still pull 31+ mpg's on the highway.

First few oil changes I used a full 6 quarts, last few I have used 5.5. I think really as long as you use atleast 5 and no more than 6 you are golden. An extra 1/2 quart of oil is not going to make your truck drive any different or effect MPG.

    Hmmm....

Filled up around 1/2 tank left with some 93 octane. Other half of the tank was 89 octance.

    MPG is doing better.

You can do what you want with the dipstick, but make sure that you have a total of 6.1 quarts in there. I am 100% convinced that you are supposed to have that amount with filter. What weight oil are you putting in?

So you think Toyota released hundreds of thousands of dipsticks that read wrong.

So you're worried that your mileage went from 22.5 to 21? Maybe something as simple as you floored the gas a few extra times during that tank?

    Looking!
I noticed my 2000 'vette gets worse mileage in the winter and agree it is because of the air/fuel ratio.

On another note, I talked to the Amoco guys in the late '90s about summer mix versus winter mix gas, and they told me they put more additives in the summer mix to help prevent vapor lock. It also makes the summer mix cost more. All I knew before then was the summer mix (Amoco 93) was consistent in my wife's bracket car, and the winter mix was definitely not. After that we would buy a 55 gallon drum full of summer mix Amoco 93 in August and use it for the rest of the season (usually late October).

I use 5.5 quarts in my V6 like the manual states. To make the dip stick easier to read I used a small round file and etched marks in a "X' pattern on both sides of the stick.

split the difference and call it 5.5 including the filter.

Toyota released hundreds of thousands of pickups with inferior build quality compared to the previous generation, so the dipstick theory is certainly plausible. The jury is still out on the design, whether it's actually better than the first gens.

With my 2.7, I put 1/2 qt into the filter before installation and 5 qt in the case, then run it and check for leaks. I don't check the level until the next morning because that's the only way to get a good read. If I need to drive it after the change but before checking the level, I don't worry because 5.5qt is certainly plenty and puts it just under the full mark.

Last oil change I put 4 oz in the filter to soak the filter and put 5 qts in as usual and it was right on the upper line. Aint blown up yet. The time I put in 5.5 qts it was quite a bit above full. IMO is just isnt that big of a deal.

On my first oil change w/ my 2008, 2.7 I put in the 6 qts and dip stick was reading way over full. I drained some out and have been using about 5 qts since then. Good to see that others have noted the same issue.

    Sorry 4x4....Got a crow?

I'm shocked...shocked at how badly the cold weather effects the truck. I love everything about my truck, but this is a bit nutty. Never seen a vehicle react this poorly to cold weather. It's not just a little bit, it KILLS the mileage. I had to switch up to 93 octane to get any kind of mileage out of a tank in the winter.

And we had a long winter. I was more angry about the cold weather b/c of my trucks MPGS than the actual cold weather. "Just warm the F up so I can get good mileage again"

Once the weather warmed up...MPGs have started improve.

Got any ideas on a way to help this situation out?

Its probably is a bad idea, but I tell ya' I've been wondering if somehow, something could be modified/fabricated that would route some exhaust back up into the air box.

Somehow tap into the exhaust pipe near the tail end and run it all the up to the air box. If the cold air is not helping anything, then maybe getting some "warm/hot" exhaust into the air box would help???

That they are following their documentation but not necessarily what the reality of the situation is?

    Agreed & ditto.......
