2004 4X4, 5 speed, regular cab, 2.7. I get 20 mpg all the time running between 70-80mph on the highway and it's not flat where I live running I-80 back and forth between NV, UT and Wy. It gets a solid 20mpg running at a constant 80mph. I pick up 1 or 2 mpg if I run premium which I do most of the time.

I'm sure it would get better but I warm it up to the cold mark before I drive off and don't bother to shut it off if I'm just running into a convenience store or something.

Bone stock AC, 5spd, carrying some bags of manure, chain saw and a tiller...
    maybe 400lbs load?...cruising ~65/70mph.

200 mile run from Wake Forest to Fville, NC and back on I-95, i got about 20/21 mpg.

I did roll behind a couple semi's for part of the way on 95.

Weird, you are at similar altitude to me and 85 octane gives me great mpg. I doubt you're are getting 2mpg improvement even if it's ethanol free E0 premium.

I did a test a few years ago when I was making a lot of trips back and forth to Kentucky through many elevation changes. I found out that I got better mileage with 89 octane than 87 but 91 wasn't any better. I don't know if the long uphill grades were causing the timing to retard and lose power to avoid pre-ignition or what. It was about 1mpg better, so it barely paid for itself. Normal mixed driving the mileage was the same so I would only use 89 if I was doing all highway driving.
E0 got me better mileage but not enough to offset the price premium.

Well, I've been running 88 for quite a while and just switched over to 91 since the truck has always seemed to run better with it. My mileage went from 20mpg to 21-22 by the Scangauge and checking it the normal way. I had the same results when I drove it from Reno,NV to Salt lake City and i swapped back and forth between the two a couple of times when living in Salt Lake.

I wish I could find deathanol free but haven't looked around yet. I just relocated to WY recently. I've swapped back and forth between the 88 and 91 octane a few times over the past 6 months or so and always get the same results. It just runs better with better mileage with the 91.

I think it's pretty hard to really get a perfectly accurate mpg reading unless you drive the exact same roads every day in the exact same way every day and use the same gas from the same pump all the time.

My driving is just too different all the time from idle time to wind and what I have in the bed. A perfect example is today when I drove back from Salt lake City to Rock Springs,WY with the bed full with probably at least 500lbs of stuff. I was getting 27+ mpg avg on the scan gauge. Why? I had a 35mph tail wind and a shell for it to push against. It probably would have been down around 15 or so had I been driving against that 35 mpg wind for 100 miles.

I've gotten as low as 13mpg when I spend a day driving around on dirt roads up and down in the mountains. I average 20-22mpg but that goes up and down depending on what the truck does that week and I have noticed a definite improvement running 88 or 91 octane over 87. More with the 91.

The slight mileage increase I seem to get with the 91 isn't saving any money when I consider the price but this particular truck just runs better, seems to have better throttle response and slightly more power when I run 91 in it over 88. I don't think every engine is exactly the same even if they are the same make and model and same year. Most here in another thread have commented that their engines run up over 180*. It depends on the temp where you live of course but mine won't ever hit 180* on cool or cold days. it stays at 177-179. I actually saw 184 today while pulling a long, steep grade but then I just installed my Scangauge so I never knew what it was running at last summer when I bought the truck.

I recently did a road trip from San Francisco to Phoenix. I've got a 2013 DCSB 2.7L auto with the stock Dunlop tires and a Leer topper. Now I didn't try to save gas...I was trying to save time on my drive...so ave. speed was 80 to 85+ (tach 2500 -3000rpm) on highway 5 and highway 10 the only slow downs where on the 210 freeway.
    my average was 22-23 mpg.
Just for reference...i did the trip single day coming back 12-1/2hrs with a stop at HARRIS Ranch for dinner.

I've noticed that the 2.7 actually cruises pretty well at 80mph. Where I live that is the speed limit. That is real good time fron San Fran to phoenix.

Way back when I was in high school I made the drive from Fullerton, CA to Tuscon, AZ in a '68 AMX in 6 hrs flat and that was with a 45 min. stop for lunch. Can't do that anymore.
