Looking to mod my 2.7L for some extra power, and I'm wondering which (turbo or S/C) makes more sense. Which will cause less wear and tear on stock components? Is it even feasible to install either 'safely' on a stock 2010?? This is my daily commuter, so I want to maintain the dependability of my Tacoma. Will I have to sink more $$$ into a lot of other after market parts? I'm new to this, if you can't tell...

That is probably the more simple solution, but I REALLY love my manual 4 banger...don't really wanna give it up. Good idea though!

I know the feeling, I love mine too but I think it would be less of a headache and probably cheaper to just find an affordable V6.

I don't want to be the guy that says "Trade it in on a V6," but that's probably what you should do. $5,000 is a lot to spend on an upgrade, and if you don't have the mechanical skills to do the installation, you'll be out another chunk of change for the labor.

I drive a 2.7, and I the idea of a 4-cylinder truck outperforming a V6 would be a hoot...you know, the old David slaying Goliath sort of thing. I've done some towing, so I understand the desire for more power, but these type of installations are not just plug and play. Do a search on this forum and see what kinds of hoops some folks are having to jump through to make these things work properly.

Now, with all that said, if I had a rich uncle pass away and leave me a truckload of cash, I'd still like to do it. But at that point it would be a toy, and not a daily driver.

$5k is for parts. It doesn't include labor, testing and tuning, or other parts that may be needed.

For $8-10k, buy another commuter. Turbo is going to murder your resale value, is silly to add to a "commuter truck," and is a serious waste of money for a result that isn't going to be a comparable rocket.

It'll drive like a V6, unless you open your wallet and tear the engine down. Neither of which is wise, given you drive it for the daily commute.

That's a good word my friend. I've been reading through numerous posts, and have come across mixed reviews. Definitely realizing that maybe I need to pump the brakes a little on this idea. And unfortunately...no rich uncle. Ha!

Throw in an aftermarket air intake and you'll get a little more throttle response. Might be worth your while and not break the bank. Just makes the truck a little more fun to drive.

Best bet for a commuter anyway.

So you want more power from your current truck, and you are concerned about additional wear and tear on your truck, and you also want it to stay dependable as a daily commuter, and you don't want to spend a ton of cash...

Realistically the only choice is to upgrade to a V6 model, which will probably cost you a few grand. All of the other options will not meet one (or more) of your goals.

It's like the old classic triangle: cheap, powerful, reliable... pick two. (For women: intelligent, attractive, mentally stable... pick two.)

Well...the 'spending money' part wasn't so much the issue, I just don't want to start a project that is going to end up costing more than anticipated is all. I definitely get what you're saying though. Good point.

Dude, just do it. We'd love to see you post pics and read about your experiences with the supercharger. Buying a V6? There's no fun in that option.
