that’s awesome to hear about no vibes. Yeah mine is gonna be hard to be offset with this set up. Gas tank is on the way with skid that’s tied to the dual t case skid and all that shenanigan. Ask @Ricardo13x how he knows when he took out the doubler to stop the leaking

@02hilux did you ever work on other 3rd gen 4runners with different rear end swap aside from FJ80? Any tip on how to make speedo work? Digital cluster might be my last resort but they are expensive about 1k :spending:

Nope. Both built 3G4R had 80 rear axle. I did recall reading somewhere (might be in pirate?) years ago that someone made it work without abs sensor. IIRC, they adapt it to the tcase with a vss like the Tacoma.

quick search yields this, not sure if it was the same post I read. You might just have to dig around for it.

You might need to modify your tcase output as it is different from the Tacoma. The worm gear or doesn’t have a detention ball, something to that order.

Yup that’s the one I think I’ll try first. Didn’t realize how expensive digital instrument clusters were. But that’s last solution, thanks again!

The thing is, even with a digital cluster and gps puck provide speed, your check engine light will be on, which smog placed in CA will not smog.

Right, that’s what I talked to @Ricardo13x as one of my concerns. Right now no check engine light. So gonna go later and techstream first, see what pops up. But yeah, if digital cluster causes check engine, I’d hate that. Especially since this needs smogged yearly.

So even now, Speed not working, you don’t have a check engine light? Better make sure the bulb isn’t burnt or removed from the cluster by the PO. Both runner I worked on, the check engine light turned on as they drove home to finish attaching everything else. A 97 and 00.

Bulb isn’t burnt because when I turn key on only it lights up.

All right, update to the Speedo. I got one functioning. Ordered a Tacoma VSS from Amazon. It has 34 teeth. Here’s link: OCESTORE 83181-12020 Vehicle... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09T5TF3LW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

also ordered a 3 wire pigtail connector: uxcell Speed Sensor Connector... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJRTYQS5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Followed all instructions from here: https://www.pirate4x4.com/threads/3...g-speedo-without-wheels-speed-sensors.626684/

To summarize: by transfer case tail shaft, there’s a little cover held by a 12 mm bolt, my bolt broke, went to Ace and got a replacement only difference is just a 13 mm now. Remove that. Replace with the Tacoma VSS. It’s a bit snug but it will work itself in. Tap it in slowly and gently, it will go. Here’s how that VSS looks:

    IMG_3613.jpg

Get yourself 3 18 gauge wire of different colors to make it easier. Get some butt connectors and have them all like this.

    IMG_3625.jpg

If looking at back of connector with pig tail, left connector is signal (I used green wire), middle is ground (I used blue wire) and hot wire is all the way to right (I used red wire). Extend those wires out and route through the firewall. I routed on top of transmission and used firewall on driver side by master brake cylinder. From there I fed it to the cluster gauge dash. My cluster gauge had 4 connectors. Brown, blue, small white and big white. On blue connector, I spliced in to the grey and blue wire the signal wire (green). On brown connector, I spliced in to the black and yellow wire with the power source wire (red). This black and yellow wire has 12v on ignition only. The blue wire, I grounded on this nut (highlighted in red).

    Screenshot 2025-06-18 at 20.19.30.jpg

From there put everything back together. At first drove around the block still no speedo. @Ricardo13x sent me a post from irate4x4 where the guy said he cut the grey and blue wire. So essentially, I routed the signal wire directly to the blue connector that had the grey and blue wire. Snip I went so I eliminated the ABS ECU from possibly sending any signal to the blue connector. Well, what do you know, Speedo and odometer is working perfectly. No codes, no engine light. Just gotta drive the rig around a few hundred miles then time to get smogged. All on point for another trip to the Rubicon early August after all the jamborees are over with.
