I thought that we couldn’t directly use a 4Runner or pre 03/04 Tacoma A340F transmission due to our two years using the hybrid throttle by computer/wire vs cable in older trucks.

I’m currently talking with a transmission shop about taking the two transmissions apart and swapping output shafts/tail housings.

I found a much easier way around that by swapping the valve bodies. Beats pulling the clutch packs apart and swapping the tail housing and output shaft

So my current situation might require still pulling both apart. My current 2WD transmission has a documented history 120,000 mile life in it. My parts trans out of my 96 4Runner has ~299,800 on it.

Jeez that’s a lot of miles. I know these are reliable parts - but personally I wouldn’t put something in with that much mileage.

Yeah that’s a bit different than my situation. My 2wd trans has 182,000 and the donor 4wd has 146,000

Don't see the problem with just pulling the output shaft and tail housing and putting them in my transmission. The output shaft should be fine right? I won't be using the 4Runners transmission in my truck for sure.

Ah that would be fine. I thought you’re using the entire transmission.

No I'm just confirming that swapping valve bodies wouldn't be a good idea in my situation. 299,000 is a lot of miles and I've accounted for the rebuild/purchase of parts I can't use.

Are you still able to get good deals on parts here in AZ? I recently bought a pre-runner and will be swapping it to 4x4 as well.

Update! The Tacoma is still alive and now sleeps on the side of my house. Pretty much haven’t taken it out wheeling in a long time. Also since that build I purchased a third gen 4runner 4x4 and luckily before the market went crazy so I got an awesome deal and that became my daily.

Recently parked the 4runner and probably going to sell it as I picked up a first gen tundra 4x4 and have been really wanting to get back into my Tacoma maybe change some stuff up. Maybe just clean it and show it some love idk haha, it still starts right up and puts a smile on my kids faces so for that it’s invaluable.

getting better at welding, this is a 2000 tundra v8 4x4 and it has a “tree fall on it” which is more like the guys who had it previously were beating on it through the desert until they hit a tree. Either way replaced the doors on the driver side, threw the bed in the trash as I tend to do often and then got to work on a flatbed which is continuously evolving

    Tour991 and Dalandser like this.
