    Hi 4Runners
my daughters 4runner is overheating, takes maybe 5 minutes and needle is shooting towards red. replaced rad cap, thermostat, still fails. checked and found top hose hot, bottom hose cool to the touch. took it to Pep Boys. they charged $100.00 diagnostic fee, said radiator and thermostat needed replacing. work done, still overheating. what could it be? its not leaking. could the heater core be it? Oil on dipstick looks good. PB is saying could be head gasket. Dont want them touching it, gonna bring to my house and do some diag myself. your toughts are appreciated.
    Thanks

Are there any leaks around the water pump? With a new thermostat and radiator replaced but the water obviously not moving it could be the water pump. I am assuming they would have mentioned to you if the coolant looked discoloured or milky when the radiator was changed.

Probably wouldn't hurt to swap out the water pump. I wouldn't think the heater core would be an issue, but clearly there's no circulation going on.

If your coolant looks normal and your oil looks normal, it's likely not a head gasket.

    Pink milkshake?

Check the trans fluid for pink foam and the radiator for the same.

There's a cooler line that runs through the bottom of the radiator for the trans that's made from a brittle metal it can crack from the heating and cooling difference in cycles and cross contaminate your auto trans and coolant fluids killing both the trans and tbe engine if not addressed appropriately.

    Commonly known issue.

Can you start simple and get a real time temperature reading? The temp gauge is very vague when it comes to actual temps. In fact, it's next to useless.

Plug in a OBDII computer to get a real time temp reading.

I run a Scan Gauge II all the time. It tells me my exact temp in degrees.

Open rad cap and watch the coolant at the top, if there's tiny bubbles while reving, its likely a head gasket.

Overheating headgasket failures don't always burn a ton of coolant, but the compression gets into the cooling system.

I don't think that water pump is supposed to look like this.

I have another question. I removed the Radiator cap. let it warm up. shouldn't I see the water circulate through radiator? if so. how long. needle got middle point and stayed there. but seemed like it never flowed thru thermostat

I would say if your gauge is staying right in the middle where it should be then the water is moving. I have found that sometimes it is hard to see the water moving through the top of the radiator but I could feel it flowing through the rubber lines. I would also pickup a bluetooth OBD2 reader for cheap to connect to the CPU to see the actual engine temperature rather than rely on the cluster gauge.
