Auto tranny? There is no filter to replace, nor is there any gasket.

    Drain the trans.
    Pull the pan
You'll see the metal filter to clean and clean the magnets in the pan
    Reinstall using Toyota FPIG sealant.
IIRC, you want to let the sealant setup overnight before adding ATF fluid...

Thanks guys, so there is no transmission filter to change in my 2002 Tacoma, V-6 truck, when i go on parts sites they are selling me a filter and gasket for my truck. When changing oil should or would you use synthetic transmission oil? Thanks again.

Umm, my 02' DC has a filter, albeit a metal screen in a metal housing. When I had my tranny rebuilt the mech showed me all the metal shavings in it when the tranny let go on me.

You may be able to get away with just cleaning the metal screen, so long as its accessible. I've seen some filters that you can take apart and clean them. I think the new type is one piece whereas you just remove and replace.

If not, pull the filter and take it to the parts store when you buy a new one to match it up. Apparently another member here ran into the problem of two different filters for his truck, but they both mounted up correctly. I never heard if he used the filter that was different from the one that he pulled, but if all the mounting holes match up, I don't see a problem using it. However, I'm the type of person that likes to replace with the same type that was removed.

In regards to fluid, pull your transmission dipstick and it should be stamped the type of fluid you should use. It will probably be stamped dexron II/III. You can either buy from the dealership or a parts store. I use Valvoline Dexron/Mercron II/III at the recommemdation of the guy that overhauled my transmission. I haven't experienced any problems using it and its been several years now. Just don't buy the store brand because they don't have the same filtration standards when they make it and that's one reason why its cheaper.

Its your call whether you want to pop for synthetic, you will get many answers here on the pros/cons of using it. Imwould just say, whatever you decide upon, make it a quality/brand fluid, it's cheaper to pay now than to go through a costly repair because you cheaped out on fluid that didn't offer you protection.

Lenghty post I know, sorry about that. Hopefully it helps you out and good luck.

Tinmann, Thanks for your help, never to long a message if it helps out, I'm so confused with so many different answers whether this Toyota has a filter and gasket or not. maybe like you said, the best thing to do is drop pan and check for filter and take it to parts store, they all are trying to sell me a gasket for tranny pan, you say there is none? Again THANKS for your help and patience. Better to be safe then SORRY!!!!!

Jack, I would drop the pan after draining it and replace whatever you had to remove. If that includes a gasket, then replace the gasket.

I'd follow pray4surf's suggestion and that was 2 use some sealant on the pan before re-installing it and let it set for 24 hours before you refill with the fluid.

You may already know this, but after refilling with fluid, let the truck idle and get up to operating, then check the fluid level on the dipstick when the engine is at idle. The fluid should be between the 2 scribed marks on the dipstick. Just don't overfill it as that may introduce a whole new set of problems.

I think a member named gearcruncher is our resident transmission guru.

As in he makes or made his living that way?

You may want to contact him if you want another level of confidence about your approach.
