2004 4WD 3.4 Throttle Position Sensor issue

    What i have known over the years, stuff like that you should always buy oem, i know the prices are ridiculous. Did you have any codes in the taco?

    Thanks for the reply.

    No codes.

    When you run the VIN number, the Toyota site will claim the three-prong is a match for the 2004.
    Only problem is, the four-prong appears to be for the 2000-2002 vintage.

    When you run the four prong part numbers on Toyota's dealership sites, they come up as unavailable.

    Duralast was probably the original subcontractor.

    If feels like it's starved when I crank, so maybe adjustment?

    There are a couple threads on this issue, apparently some folks have found aftermarket 4 wire sensors that work, and others have made an adapter for the 3 wire setup.

    Another (more expensive) option is to just buy a new throttle body that comes with the TPS. The throttle bodies keep going down in price too, I think they were a little over $400 last time I checked the price at McGeorge. I had the weird TPS stutter last year that went away after pumping the pedal like 30-40 times. If the issue comes back on mine I'll probably just slap a new throttle body on it and sell the old one on ebay.

    I got it to turn over by mashing the gas, with the predictable exhaust cloud.
    Let off pedal, stalls out.
    Still not right.

    I replaced the TPS twice on my 98 so far, usually its much more of a subtle problem like slight stumble at certain throttle positions.
    I doubt TPS could cause a no start but you could easily rule it out if you have a ohm meter, FSM has the resistance ranges for closed to WOT.

    I would check all vacuum hoses and main air inlet, clean MAF. On my 98 at about 20 years pretty much all the vacuum lines and main air inlet were shot.
    You might consider buying all of them because some hoses are being discontinued and of course Toyota made every damn large diameter hose, even straight ones, molded.

    I almost went into a dealer with a picture of my engine to get every hose but thankfully reason prevailed and I checked online catalogs and I bought every hose shown on the vacuum diagram for my truck (except EGR related). I thought I got some extras but eventually found every one. I think it ended up about $250, the main inlet is $150 as I recall.

    Yotashop has some vacuum line kits but I don't think I saw one for 3.4.
