I have a 2004 taco 6cyl auto transmission. It has the J-lock manual transfer shifter (not push button). I busted the 1 7/8” coupler between the transmission and transfer case. Toyota in Hattie’s burg says the part was discontinued at the same time he says he can’t find the part on the drawings. We can all agree he is lying and simply can’t do his job. Can anyone on here help me locate the coupler

I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s lying as tons of parts are obsolete for a 20+ year old truck.

Well the mis leading is saying you can’t find the part in the drawings so you tell your customer it is discontinued. This part makes the truck functional. Nothing has been found in Toyota literature to say it is discontinued. I have uploaded a pic so it is not confused with the push button transfer case

Input or output side? I don't recall that being something that is removable and I've ripped apart the transfer case more times than I care to count. If I recall and looking at your pic, that sure does look like its part of the shaft.

As mentioned above, check the diagrams for yourself. Use your VIN and then look under powertrain. Everything that is part of the trans and the transfer case is there.

As for a j-shift transfer case, going to be the same guts. Here is a shortened URL to a 1995 J-shift transfer case on partsouq.

If you want to post up additional pics (zoomed out a bit more), I can take another look. Need to understand how this piece broke off and from where.

    Cheers.

I think that coupler is part of the transfer case input shaft. Google pn# 36201-35061, it must of broke off of the shaft so that it looks like a coupler. Keep us updated.

That is what I'm thinking as well. How it broke... :notsure: If it was from sheer force, I shudder to think of what else is happening inside that transfer case.

    :nuclear:

Maybe a piece of gear or something broke off and got wedged between the gears, so something had to give? Or really worn out trans/transfer case mount and engine mounts caused enough flex to break it off but the case should show signs of cracking. Weird...
