Did you guys with camper tops remove the bed rail caps before putting the camper top on?

Mine leaks from the air blowing water up under the rail cap.

I am thinking about taking the top off and removing the rail cap but I dont know if it is solid metal on the bed rails or if it is full of gaps.

    Yes? No?

What is under the bed rail cap?

    Thanks!

don't know what is under the rail, my snug top sits on top of the bed rail and clamps on the rails on the inside of the bed.

I think your shell will sit lower and look funny if you take the caps off. Was a thread about something like that.

Mine has 1/4" x 2" weather striping down both sides applied to the underside of the shell and a thick rubber seal along the front edge of the truck box. My shell does have a wide flat part that sits on the bed rails and the outside curves down to just below the plastic cap on the truck bed side. Most of them seem to be made that way. It's water tight.

It rains a lot in Vancouver!!!!

Mine was the second camper top made at ARE for a second gen 2005 model. It does have weather stripping under the top where it meets the rail cap. But it sits on top of the rail cap and does not have any overlap on the sides. I can take a water hose and point it up toward the rail cap and it just flows into the bed. But the camper top is sealed on the rail cap.

I guess I need to take the rail cap off and put a seal under it.

It has never bothered me until now I need to put things back there that cant get wet.

Anyone ever taken a rail cap off?

i have no weather stripping and doesnt leak at all. go to the hardware store and get some single side foam tape. put it on the bed caps and reinstall the cap.

Does the rail cap just pop off or is it screwed down somewhere?
