I’m really leaning towards the cam gears!!! And I’m not getting rid of her, ever she’s mine!!! Also has a new frame and years of mods. Basically a new truck other than the motor and trans being out of it at the moment. Don’t know how I feel about taking apart the short block but also not sure I wanna put a motor with 250k back in without rebuilding completely. I just need a miracle from the motor gods and some balls to dive in I guess.

How often did you replace the coolant? What was your oil change intervals and oil? Thanks!

Aftermarket from a recognizable brand like Beck Arnley is fine. The plastic is apparently just nylon 66, nothing exotic.

I know she got hotter than i wanted maybe 235 and my room mate was topping her off for a wile when I was outta state. No freeze plugs popped and she doesn't look bad but who knows.... Looking all over for prices on used and rebuilt. Going to call around and see what kinda numbers i get for rebuilding this block on Monday. With 250k+ on her i dont feel ill be able to handle the whole rebuild and would need to take it to someone anyway. Dont think its wise to just do the gaskets and put it back in. Insight and leads appreciated!

Well since the head gasket leaked I'd replace coolant a lot. Engine oil changes every 5k

So I will assume no coolant change until the leak?

I'm really surprised to see that old shitty designed cam chain. Roller or double roller was such an improvement on Domestics.

    Too few to list.
Could have something to do with Japanese design because motors over there hardly gets driven past 50K miles. Though they products are typically engineered well, they don't have to worry about longevity. That's why all JDM engines are sourced from there due to the low mileage.

nah, i must have looked at it w/o glasses the other day. It's double roller. I may have even been looking at a stock photo replacement that showed something altogether different it's so obvious today.

    Question:
    Installing my cams now.
    I found 1 sleeve.
I'm guessing it goes on my exhaust cam.
Does the other head need one as well.
I'm guessing I misplaced it or accidentally left it on the head and sent it out to be resurfaced. ‍

Confirmed with the shop foreman @ Tracy Toyota that only the right side intake cam needs it.

That's strange. So the left side has no enlarged hole to hold one? I find people at dealerships can not form the words 'I don't know' with their mouths.

edit: I suppose I don't understand. Doesn't the top picture show an alignment sleeve on both sides of all 4 end cam journals?

These are the heads side by side.
    Left is the passenger (right)
    Right is the driver (left)

    I'm not sure as well.
    To me.
Common sense would tell me all 4 cams need the bottom bearing half.
    But i guess not. :notsure:

I thought you were talking about the alignment sleeves. Jeez, a 1/2 a shell.......

Is the cam loose in there?

I sort of see what you are saying. Where there is a cut out on all 4 cam ends where a bottom half would go?
    Looks like it to me.
Parts was gonna sell me 4 bottom half sleeves. But talked to the shop foreman and then called back and said it's not needed.
