I noticed that the truck runs smoother, and the sound of the tick lessened. This just may be my brain tricking me into thinking this way to justify the extra $0.20 a gallon.

Just bought my 06 and it bugs me that when you accel moderaly to hard the engine sounds like it has a manifold leak??? Is this what everyone else hears. in nuetral you cant make it happen, and if you floor it the engine must just drown out the ticking noise whaen driving. I wish i could drive another to see if its really normal.

Same with me...but I use 93 octane. It also improved my fuel mileage by ~2.7mpg. :D

Imagine just driving a brand new one off the lot and it sounding like that. I was having a hard time with it. So I went up to the dealership and they allowed be to choose one at random to drive and compare. ANd you guessed it. It sounded exactly the same. And your description of the sound is exactly how I described it.....sounds like a 1970s Ford station wagon with an exhaust leak......WOOOHOOOO.

Anyway, don't get me started. I am still in the "behaviour modification" phase that hopefully will make me not care about my brand new truck that sounds like an old rundown heap.

Sorry, I know that is a little harsh. And I do like the truck very much and will keep it for years and years. It is very irritating though. I came from the GM camp of high horsepower pushrod motors(LSx series) and those things ran wonderfully and sounded even better. WHen I think of Toyota, I think of Precision. These motors just don't sound all that "precise".

Well, I just dropped my truck at the dealer for Toyota's DSPM to check out my ticking issue. I'm not expecting much, the dealer already told me it's the timing chain adjusters and it's normal. It amazes me how many different diagnosis Toyota gives on that noise. The customer service manager set me up with the appointment and gave me a free rental, KIA mini van, turns almost as many heads as my Taco!
Unless they find something, my next step will be an early oil change with Mobil 1.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one pissed about this. My 2008 has just underwent it's first oil change. That and high octane had a marginal effect, but it didn't go away completely. The sound is reminiscent of my '95 22RE 4cyl. engine I had. Although, I expected a four banger to rattle, not my 4.0L V6. I'm already looking into a CAI or ehaust to mask the sound when I get into it and don't feel like turning the radio up to hide the noise.

    Just my two cents.

It may be all in my head, but I swear full synthetic oil has quieted the tick.

I just installed BF Goodrich Mud-Terrains and the noise is completely gone, too bad Toyota doesnt come out with a TSB to throw a set of those on!!

Well it would make sense if they howled loudly enough to deafen you and mask the noise of the "tick".

Have 100 miles on my 09, I ca nhear the ticking but chalk it up to the inherent noise of these engines and I base that simply from reading this site. THANKS!!

I guess it's good to hear that everyone is having the same issue with engine ticking noise, but there is one thing that I find strange. My 2009 Tacoma Double cab 6 cyl has the engine ticking noise but my 2008 4-runner Sport 6 cyl doesn't. Doesn't Toyota use the same motor in both trucks?

My 2005 has had the tick since we drove it off the lot. But in the last two weeks the engine has developed a rattling sound at about 1200-1500 rpm. I took it in to Toyota and they said the noise is piston slap and its normal. There was another Tacoma in the dealer for the same noise complaint.

I started running premium fuel about 6 months ago and it seemed to lessen the ticking sound. The sound I hear now is not the famous tick though. Changing the oil to synthetic made the rattle louder.
