    Too few to list.
Hmmm... There's a lot of things that could tick under the hood. Main ones are fuel injectors and lifters. I have had all kinds of cars and the one before this one was a Civic Si and it had a louder fuel injector tick than the truck now. It's all normal!

If switching to synthetic oil made your tick louder, it's definitely not the fuel injectors!

09 Pyrite Prerunner AC with 1700 miles, has made the tick since mile 1. Bought it with 10 miles on it.

09 DBL TRD Sport with 5000 miles on it. Mine ticks also and has since day one. I was so pissed at first I couldn't enjoy my new truck, I wouldn't listen to the radio because I was so into the tick. I brought my truck in and the service department said it was the Valve Train and it was completly normal. I was still pissed that this 30k truck sounded like lawnmower but hey I love the looks HA! I have since gotten used to it but its taken some time.

Here is the fix to the dashboard buzz coming from the passengers side glove box area. I had the dealer do this for me at the risk of me breaking something. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2640306#post2640306

    Good Luck!

I have a 2006 and had or have the ticking. I switched to synthetic and it seems to have diminished, and it seems the more miles you put on it to diminish as well. Either that or I am so used to it I don't hear it anymore. I first thought I had an exhaust leak and took it in to have it checked, they indicated it was normal. I didn't like the answer, but like I said, either it has become less apparent or I am just used to it now.

If the noise is from the valves seating, wouldn't the tick be too fast and constant to even hear? It would sound more like a buzz considering how fast and often the valves open and close.

Also, any reason why synthetic oil quiets it down? I plan to switch to Mobil1 or Penzioil Plat synth on my next oil change and hope it reduces the sound. It drives me nuts.

The smooth sound of the engine under load makes up for it. I get on it all the time because I love the whirring sound! Even with my lead foot, I still get 15.5mpg with a v6 dc.

My 05 Tacoma did this for almost 3 years. When I took it in for AC service they said they adjusted the stearing linkage and for a few weeks I didn't knotice it but it eventually came back. Not sure if that helps but it steal does it and I seem to notice it more when I'm back out my drive on colder days or driving at low speeds.

Not nessasarily. Valves tick. They are all going to be off by some degree, so only the loudest you will be able to hear.

Also, if at idle of 600 rpm, the valves are going to be closeing 5 times a second. Hardly a "Buzzing" sound. :)

My 09 has had the tick from day one. I took a scope to it and its not coming from the valve covers or below. Its actually the plastic clapping together within Toyota's version of a PCV Valve. If you place the scope to it you can tell it is the source of the sound. It does get worse when it is cold because the plastic is harder. The dealer told me it is not a problem it is just how it is.

So, who wants to try venting the crank case into the atmosphere instead of the intake? ;)

I belive it s the emissions purge.....thing. You can isolate it with some rubbe donuts. I posted a link to the fix on here a while back, but I cant find it.

Just bought mine, 2009 4x4 V6, made in Mexico. Yep, has engine ticking. It sounds like it is coming from the valve cover area. Seems louder when accelerating. Also, the A/C compressor and clutch had to be replaced. The A/C would never turn off. This is my first Toyota and I was really expecting better quality than this.

Welcome to Tacoma World. Sorry to hear about the problems. The ticking is common among Tacomas, and goes back to the first gen 3.4 and 2.7. Most engines that use a shim under bucket valve train are going to be noisy. Many manufactures use sound dampening trick in the engine to cover up the sound (Honda). Unfortunatly, Toyota doesnt. Rest assured, the ticking has no affect on reliablity.

Also, it probably wouldn't be that loud in the cabin if they would put some decent sound deadiing material in these things. When it rains it sounds like I am getting hit by rocks.

Thats the truth! I have though about shooting some expanding foam into the roof, but Im unsure about doing it. Not sure if it can mess anything up.

That is funny cause I have thought about the same thing, but wasn't sure if it would help. I really want to take the entire head liner down and put in some sound deadening mat, but that looks like it would be a major PITA. Anyone ever taken the entire headliner down?

The ticking noise is normal, its not at an idle its when you excelerate. i had it on my 05 Tacoma. I brought it to 2 Toyota dealers and local auto shop, they all said it was a normal noise. I just purchased my 09 and i hear the same thing. I really wouldent worry about it. There all doing it.

This is exactly what I am hearing. When you step on the gas a bit, it almost sounds like something is rattling around. The engine doesn't sound 'solid'. Kinda depressing and hard to get over!

my 05 Tacoma making the smae sound i almost got worried but now i am relieved that its no big deal and you all have the same problem. It really does sound like a weak engine... But it does not bother me as long as i know its common.
