2010 replacing calipers questions

    Add me to the list of New England crusted calipers. Got the set up @crashnburn80 recommended - slotted cryos and TRD pads. Also got the Speed Bleeders.. Convinced myself (and more importantly the Mrs.) it would be an hour, hour and a half at the most. 5 hours later I now need a reman driver's side caliper....

    No use posting pics - they're just like those that have been posted before in this thread. Needed new pins (only a 45 minute drive across the state to a Yota dealer because my local ORielly's and NAPA didn't have them) but the quickest way is RT 2 in northern NH and it's kinda a cluster now with the tragic accident that killed 7 motorcyclist.

    Not that I am not sympathetic and my heart goes out to the friends and families of the victims. I hope the scumbag spends most if not all of his natural life locked away.

    BUT individuals who think they can stroll about the white line on a major through way and think it's the motorists that are assholes as they drive by at 10 miles an hour are beyond me...Huge ride planned tomorrow so I'm glad I did this today.

    Anyhow...

    Needed the 3 lb hammer and a construction wonder bar to get three of the four pins out. Used a 3/16 nail set to drive them out once they started moving. The fourth needed to be cut. (Man those oscillating cut offs are a life saver. ) Got my passenger side back together but found a frozen piston on the driver's side. Ratching caliper spreader, C-clamp and old pads, tapping on it, nothing worked.

    Found an Autozone where we're going tomorrow and they're showing a 13WG in stock - crossing my fingers they in fact have one there.

    Thinking of keeping the core and finding a passenger side on carpart.com to rebuild & paint.

    Damn sure I'm going to start taking those pins out at least a couple of times a year when I rotate my tires - clean and lube them up.

    Actually, rust is the only downside.


    Ahhh, might as well add frost heaves.


    Ice, yes ice is pretty bad when it happens - more so now with climate change..

    Idiots that don’t know how to drive in the snow.. yeah, I guess that’s a downside too.

    But rust, rust is a real PITA...

    Drove by there a couple days back going east to west and didn't know I was coming up to that area. Obscure orange sign saying may be activity on shoulders(or something like that), come over the hill and there are a bunch of cars stopped with folks wandering around all over the place. Got the evil eye as I idled on by. Granted some of that was likely because my rental had Mass plates... I bet this will add another annual evnt to the already large amount of motorcycle tourism NH gets.

    Back on topic sort of, these threads about rust make me dread my plan to move back to the New England area. Spent my youth wrenching on rusted out crap.:annoyed: Still moving back though.

    I guess the memorial ride went without a hitch...

    Don’t worry about the rust issue, just keep up the regular maintenance and Spring cleaning and you’ll be fine if you come back @ABNFDC .


    An update on my project:
    Got the new caliper on without issue. Nice they come preloaded w fluid. Changed to the Speed Bleeder and it was a bit crazy on torquing it down. Each time I though I hit bottom, a bit of fluid trickled out when I hit the brake. Finally got it to close (easy to tell as it was the drivers side and could see no fluid coming out) then went through most of my 12 oz bottle of fluid to ensure all air was out.

    The new caliper came with both the small cotter pins and the long, single piece that spans both pins then hooks on a hole in the caliper. Since the new caliper didn’t have the hole, I went with the cotter pins.

    Test drive went well and found an added benefit....

    For a while, I’ve had a slight vibration but this seems to be gone now- I suspect it could’ve been the frozen caliper piston that then warped the rotor. Time will tell.


    A question for the masses- there was a side to side wobble on the plastic reservoir from the metal part of my Master Cylinder. Anyone else notice this? Is it normal?
