Just for grins what's the difference on a 3rd gen alternator?

Voltage regulation is controlled by the ECU on the 3rd gen.

    Good price summary.

I've replaced three alternators (two were on Camrys) using all new units from Advance and AZ and have had no issues with them. I'm sure they're not Denso quality, but so far so good. When an alternator dies at 7PM, and the local store has it in stock, you go that route.

The last alternator I had rebuilt was 20 yrs ago, bearings and brushes, and it failed about a year later- the voltage regulator stayed open and it about blew up the battery :) The local starter and alternator rebuilders have about all disappeared.

I haven't done a Denso/Toyota, but I've replaced bearings and brushes in older alternators and it's not difficult if you have a small press, or a puller, and the splitter plates for the bearings. Sometimes the cases are hard to get apart.

While warranties are nice they don’t help you when you’re out in the boonies.

My OEM alternator on my 07 shit the bed at 175k miles at night at about 20 degrees and in an area with no cellphone service. Luckily for me I only had to walk maybe five miles to find a farm and called a tow.

OEM for me and I consider taking a spare on remote trips.

All good points and that is why when I go on a trip off road I carry a second battery already charged. Never know and this will get me started and out. Now That I have a boat and have seen the battery switches in them I will be adding a second battery tray under the hood and a Blue Sea M series Battery switch #6007 a 4 position. That allows me to select battery 1 or 2 or both and you wire them in parallel so 12VDC still. This model protects the ignition and alternator circuits good up to 900 Amps. Anyone that wants a second battery this works well and allows full isolation so you only drain/kill 1 battery when you are playing the audio, using lights, or another accessories. And in extreme cold allows you to use both batteries when the cranking amps are reduced. You can charge each battery separately or together. Just an additional safety consideration for you if you get way out there and alone! I do.

If I were to build an overland rig maybe but I don’t want a dual battery setup. Battery jump pack and spare alternator works better for me.

Thanks for all the information on this post. I ordered a denso, Funny thing is that I was able to order it from Walmart! There's no core charge return though, for $205.40, $222.35 with tax. I guess I can get my OEM alternator rebuilt as a backup then?

Walmart sells everything. You can even get a 55 gallon drum of personal lubricant.

I didn't see if you guys posted this: Alternator Rebuild

I was off-roading with @Sandman614 and my alternator gave up. After swapping batteries we got me back to an auto parts store that didn't have any in stock.
We were able to get it off the truck, disassemble it , and discovered mud/rock mix that kept the brushes from extending. Put it back together and I've got another 50k on it.
    (knock on wood)

Shortly after this incident @Sandman614 had to rebuild his own, so he posted the thread above which may help someone out.

    Cheers

I don’t have the short answer for that with an OEM replacement, but I followed @tacozord ‘s big 3 install personally.

Would I be correct in saying a 240 amp alternator is rarely pushing 240 amps at driving RPMs, and an accessory would have to draw that amperage for that much current to flow?
