We are talking 4H here right ? I lock it in all the time up to 60 kph

Maybe that's why you are having so much trouble

Yeah, the on-the-fly comment was pertaining to 4H.
But 4L is way more stubborn. ( at a stop, with the drivetrain unloaded of course)

    Yeah, but not very fast.
    Sub 5 MPH.

Getting into 4H is not too bad, it's 4L that's a pain sometimes.

    Edit:
And I'm always on dirt or snow.
I can get it, I just have to shut the friggin engine off sometimes.

Yeah, it sucks, but I'm over it.

I was programmed on WWII 4WD technology, so this is a minor inconvenience.

^^^, me too... (but up to 100 kph). I have had 3 Tacomas now... all three with the ADD (Automatic Disconnecting Differential) which is how the Tacoma can shift on-the-fly into or out of H4, up to 60 mph. It is free wheeling in H2, so less wear and friction than your WWII Jeep in which all the front drive running gear rotated, even when you were in 2WD.

Isn't this in every 4WD sun visor?:

OK , let's say you are right and binding up the front end has no detrimental effect on the vehicle , my question would be " why " ?

Why are you driving with 4WD engaged on dry pavement , or wet pavement for that matter , unless you have some attraction to crappy fuel economy and not being able to make anything but very wide corners ?

I will tell you one reason you would be in 4H on dry roads. Essentially all winter here in Minnesota, you will be transitioning many times from snow-covered/icy roads to clear roads in one trip. There is one spot in my neighborhood where to get on to the main road I have to accelerate from a stop, on an icy uphill, on to a clean road, while turning. If I am in 2H, it is so slow to move that I couldn't safely merge.

I do get the point, that what is the point of using 4H often/daily/etc. I am just saying that most people driving the truck would not even know one way or the other what position they are in, or maybe even what the t-case switch is for at all.

Ice has give and your wheels can slip . I have similar conditions to deal with where I live , but I switch back to 2H when I am on the dry roads .

You are correct about a lot of people not knowing the difference , they start all the " My truck won't turn !!!! " threads

My 2010 took 4 trips to the dealer to fix the difficult shifting into 4wd, sometimes it would take multiple tries, and 20 minutes. It was only un-cooperative in cold weather, maybe that is the case with the OP's truck.

A-TRAC only become active when you are in Low Range 4WD, and have pressed the button... and then only if one or more tires loose traction (ie. spins). So, no dry pavement use at all... Off road, it is no more difficult to turn than low range 4WD already is with open differentials.

Instead of just slowing down the spin (as is the case with TRAC or Limited Slip systems), it stops the spin to the same rotation as the traction tire... ie. it matches the rotation so torque (power) is equally balanced... just as it is with a locked differential. Because it releases as soon as traction is regained, there is no steering issues with A-TRAC.

You turned a serious question into a game.

DavidK I guess I just need you to explain the whole atrac thing to me. I mean I watched the video but that didn't help. You seem to be knowledgable
