my first new vehicle buying experience, its obviously too late to do anything about it. but Im open to tip and tricks for the next time I need to buy a vehicle.

I thought it was a pleasant experience but when the military isnt treating you like complete shit anything is a pleasant experience for you.

I asked for my specific truck which they didnt have, the manager looked it up, showed me the invoice and gave it to me at 500 over invoice. 3 days later the truck arrived, I finalized paperwork and drove my truck home.

 

I'm looking at my Buyers Order. I had the 6spd manual in the off road access cab built because there was none anywhere in the eastern half of the country at the time. I called at least a dozen dealers to confirm this. I was told it was $100 dollars over invoice when it got here(had it rushed through production in 3-4 weeks). Which I take with a grain of salt. I did the Consumer Reports car buyer deal. Pay like $20 and they tell you what regional prices are on specific configurations. With the CR info I went in with $29K as my price. They got within $254 dollars of what I wanted. I paid $29,254. Out the door was $31,742.84. Could have done better, could have done worse. My best piece of advice is in regards to financing. Shop around before you go. See what you qualify for. I sat down with their finance manager and he offered me 4.5% I said I've got 10K cash and that I was prequalified for 2.79% elsewhere. He was quick to offer me 2.79%. They didn't even ask for proof that I could get that rate elsewhere. I ended up with a payment of $389 a month. I got my truck from Koons Yota in Tysons Corner in Viginia, just outside of D.C. What rates are you guys paying?

I am paying 3.25% for 72 months. Could have maybe gotten slightly better, but not much. Paid $29,900 for the truck before trade in and ended up at like $26 and change out the door. payment of roughly $410.

 

Traded my 08 DCSB SR5 PreRunner in Silver Streak Mica for a 2012 DCSB Sport PreRunner in MGM (has non JBL headunit with Blue Tooth and XM). Total out the door was $29,500 with Tax, Tag, State Fees and Gap Protection.

 

I always ask to see the dealer's invoice (the true invoice price). It shows how much they are paying for advertising in your area which is over and above the invoice price you will find on Edmunds, etc. and is the cost the dealer is actually financing from Toyota (of course it does not show the dealer holdback which would effect the true net price they are paying). It also will show you exactly what options are on the truck, how long it's been on their lot, and whether they are the originating dealer. I don't see how the ones they print off the main system could be altered. If you've done your homework, you know the invoice pricing for the truck, model, options, etc., just probably not what they are paying for advertising. And, if there has been a recent price increase, you will know if they paid the old or new higher price. I've never had a dealer balk at showing me the invoice.

My goal is to never pay more than that invoice price. Refuse to pay any dealer fees they throw in like document fees, etc. which are just additional profit for the dealership. If they insist on charging you these, then make them take it off the purchase price - net zero cost to you. Also, if there are any rebates in effect, you want to make sure and take them off the invoice amount. I recently bought my 2012 for $254 under invoice. With the $500 rebate, the total was $754 under invoice. They were the originating dealer and the truck had been sitting on their lot for over 30 days. It only had 12 miles on the clock which also indicated that it may have not been generating much interest (i.e., there had not been many people asking to test drive it). Once a vehicle has been on their lot for awhile, they are more likely to deal on it. Last year, I paid invoice for my daughter's 2011 (less the $500 rebate), but it was the only silver mica in the area at the time with the options and color she wanted.

To me, this is the OTD price. TTL varies too much by state to throw this into the equation of pricing. It's something you're going to pay no matter what. I also don't consider trade-in as part of the OTD price. If I have a trade, I'll work out a cash deal first. Then, see what they will give you over and above this (the true value of what they are giving you for your trade). Typically, you will make more money selling it on your own if you have that option. And, I don't know the laws in all states, but in Missouri, you can still get a credit for sales tax against the new vehicle if you sell another vehicle (can be multiple vehicles or even a boat or rv) within 180 days before or after the purchase of the new vehicle. And, if you've already paid the sales tax on the new vehicle before you sell your old one (in Missouri sales tax is paid at the license bureau when you license it, not to the dealer at the time of sale), you can request a refund from the state.

 

I'm sure this is not the dealer's invoice... everything i ask for the dealer's invoice they give me this.. and they want $33719.83 OTD.... im not done yet.... i want between 32k - 33k(max)

That is the dealers invoice - $$ anyway - Their cost is the $31,194 - which doesn't include:

- they get at least part, if not all of the TDA $504 back (that's padding - most dealers won't budge on it, but they might. i have found some dealers that do).
- dealer holdback
- factory to dealer incentives (check edmunds to see if there are any)

It will just depend on supply/demand in your area in addition to how willing the dealer is - i generally won't pay over $500 over their cost - so if you can get it for low to mid $31's you'll have done well -

 

ah... i see you're in so cal... i was able to get a smoking deal for someone on this board at carson toyota... called the fleet manager (they had the truck she wanted), they faxed me the invoice - gave me BY FAR the best price out of five other quotes from other dealers fleet managers and she went down and picked it up.

the fleet manager at toyota of orange (one of the fleet managers anyway) was particularly an ahole... swore to me i couldn't do better and he'd been in the business 30 years blah blah blah (i've been around the business that long too btw... as my buddy owns dealerships and i know exactly how they work). i got it for about $1,400 less than they were quoting me... again though i don't know the current market conditions (i.e. current supply, etc.).

 

Now you say you wont pay over $500 their cost, and if i can get to mid 31s i will have done well..... is that including tax title license or before?

 

always before - you can't get around those costs. that way we're talking apples to apples - in that tax rates, etc. vary even within the state of California.

it's simple... find who has the truck you want (via their website generally), call the fleet manager - ask what they lowest price is on it, have them email you the invoice.

the invoice copies i used to get had the dealer holdback and wholesale reserve listed on them - i think they've gotten smart and hidden that or the printout you showed me is a different view of the data.

Notice the dealer holdback and financial reserve at the bottom... both items the dealer gets back. got this one for 26.1 - so they gave up about half of their holdback items. anyone who tells you they got it for thousands less than invoice is almost assuredly incorrect and not factoring in something correctly (factory incentive they didn't know about, trade in, some crazy high financing the dealer gets a kickback for, etc.)

i think they did change the look of the invoice or the report... because a few dealers that provided me their invoice, does not show the Dealer Holdback and the Financial Reserve..

And yes i agree with you on the tax varying statement... my residence on my record was in El Monte (9.25%) but i changed my residence to Fallbrook (7.75%)

"Hello, I'm so sorry, I just sent you another TRD, just ignore that one. Anyway, to get to $32,500 otd, we have to sell you the truck at $29,500 plus fees. It can be done, but you have to come in."

i'm not gonna buy this BS because this guy has been sending me crap quotes... crap meaning quotes for truck im not looking for.. he keeps giving me SR5s or Offroad ones and such.. or ones with the extra sport package.. -_-..... even after i told him to a 'T' what im looking for.

anyways, im planning to use his quote as leverage with other dealers.
