so i was getting ready to mow the grass today and cranked up the truck to move it, when i cut it off, i hear this sound coming from under the hood like something was still spinning and making a whistling grinding noise. weird. it did it twice. then i cranked it up, let it run for two minutes, cut it off, sound goes away. hasnt come back. very strange. any suggestions? only have 1700 miles on her.

These trucks do some self test stuff after they're turned off...that might of been what you heard. I've never actually heard it...just remember reading about it in the owners manual.

The self test is only when the key is turned to the on position I believe. He had shut the engine completely off.

yeah, engine was shut off. it was weird. you guys remember the movie Predator? After the black dude unloads his gun on the Predator in the woods? after he runs out of ammo you hear his big gun still spinning...thats what it sounded like. haha

Just read in my 07 owners manual that there's a leak detection pump that performs a fuel evaporation leakage check approximately five hours after the engine is turned off. Says it can be heard from underneth the "deck" for several minutes. Maybe that's what you heard?

Did you ever figure this out or did it stop? My new 2013 Tacoma is doing that. Windup sound for couple seconds after shutting down.

Pop the hood and see what it is? Hood latch is on the left side of the drivers side knee bolster.

Probably might be the new secondary air injection pump that the 2012 and later tacomas have its on the left side under the hood. It helps make the CAT's work better especially when you first start up and the engine is in open loop mode.

Thank you! If sure did sound 'on purpose' but just odd.
