I think this is completely normal, and one of my favorite things about the truck. When going downhill; If you hit the breaks and are on a steep enough grade, it will automatically kick in engine breaking to conserve your brake pads and maintain your speed. It was a little weird at first, but now that I have gotten use to it I love it.

Ive got a 2013 dbl cab V6. First owner. I didn't even have 5k miles on it yet and i had the same problem driving home from work one day my truck just dropped out of gear. RPM's shot up. i let off the gas pulled over and put it in and out of gear a few times then it drove fine for another mile and dropped out again. I putted home and went to put it in reverse and had nothing. after speaking with a buddy of mine he said that in most 5 speed transmissions that 4th gear and reverse use the same clutch in the trans. Had the truck towed to dealership and they told me nothing was wrong with it they could not duplicate the issue and i had to take my truck back and give the loaner car back. The receptionist made a mistake and gave me the mechanics notes with my paperwork. His notes stated that code : P0776 was stored in truck. i googled this code and it is a transmission code which is a solenoid that controls the trans shifting. Apparently the dealership did not want to fix my truck and they did what the call " Flash" the trans computer. I no longer have the check engine light on and Ive driven it another 2500 miles with out it dropping out of gear. However, since i got the truck back if i from a stop lightly hit the gas the truck up shifts rapidly im in 3rd gear my 15-18 mph. anyone had this problem since the last comment on the thread? The dealership doesn't want to hear it bc they wont do anything unless the check engine light is on.

Afterwards, did you tell the dealer about this trans/solenoid code you found on your paperwork so they can look into the possible failing of the part?

Yes i did talk to them about it. Service manager gave me some bs excuse that the mechanic wrote that down because that is what corporate technical services told him to look for. however everything Ive read online with that code most people seem to have a similar problem as i do. The dealership doesn't want to take a trans pan down a replace a 200$ solenoid they would rather just flash the trans computer. I'm wondering the more i think about this and read about it is it possible that the dealer flashed the trans computer and didn't reprogram it? Could this be why the truck rapidly up shifts?

On my 2012 dc sport, I hate engine braking! I went to a smaller truck for the gas mileage. I spent top of the line. Oh she's a beauty but I hate the mileage. On a good day I'm getting 16 mpg. That' not pushing the pedal much. The 5.7 Tundra does better! In my opinion engine braking revs the tach, which we all know consumes fuel! Not again! 8 speed trans in a full size next for me! If I'm gonna get 16 mpg I may as well be able to carry payload. I will say I feel this truck would Last forever

My 2012 dc,trd, does the engine braking also.I drive in 4,in town, brakes when pressing on the brake more than lightly.Have also had it "brake" in D,with cruise on,65 MPH.Going down a steep hill, speed was about 5 MPH above cruise setting, engine braking came on;I never know what to expect out of my trans anymore.

The Tacoma has a few shifting issues .
I am assuming the 8 speed you are talking about is designed by Chrysler ?
Chrysler still hasnt got their 4 speeds working properly and continue using hydraulic technology from the 1960,s . Lotta guys that own the Rams are finding the 8 speed transmission is spending more time in the shop than on the road . Some dont even leave the dealership and the trans is baked .

in the future, youll see more speeds added to vehicles. Just a better idea to get into a higher gear at higher speeds. You see it in the Toyota cars. Even the trucks have gone to 6spd manual. Cant stand engine braking! VVT? Why not Toyota? The Tacoma is a smaller light truck. I just cant get the gas mileage above 15-16 mpg

I beleive you may be feeling your fuel injectors turning off . Seems to be one of Toyota,s strategies to save you some fuel . Whenever you release the accelatator , off go the injectors . Older vehichles in the past didnt do this and coasted down hills quicker which may be why everyone thinks the 2nd gen has an agressive engine breaking feature .
I have a 2010 and when releasing the gas pedal , the truck slows quickly .
