That U shaped coolant pipe will not come off. Tried tapping it with a mallet but I really do not want to break anything.

Yes the rear housing is difficult at first but it will come off . Do not damage the gaskets . Tape up your intake holes on the head . I took a heavy screwdriver and worked the housing from side to side . The smaller pipe will not move . It will move back and forth with the bigger pipe as an assembly. If the little pipe would have been formed a little different. This job would be so much easier. You just don't want to get it in a bind . It's tough coming off but easy going back on. Did you get all 6 bolts out of the housing . There is 4 nuts and 2 hidden bolts

On the passenger side of the water outlet housing. There is a 10 mm head bolt you can not see . One on the driver side as well . You have to feel around for it .

I just had to replace the water pipe assy on this 4.0L. Toyota screwed the pooch on this design. They should be ashamed of themselves. There should be a law that makes the engineers repair these engines in the field!! What I did to remove the pipes was to cut the two brackets to separate the pipes. The large pipe out first. Heater pipe second. Full access to KS. Inspect pipe for heater carefully. If rusted replace whole your this deep into the engine. Cut brackets to separate new pipes. The heater pipe will still be fastened on both ends. Large pipe mounted almost center but both ends mounted in water manifolds.
