I have been wondering what I would get for my 2015 DCLB TRD Sport 4x4 in trade towards a new 16.

I thought that may be case.
imo, the dealer will make some dollars on a new vehicle. they will make some dollars on a trade. If you have a Carmax in your area, you could get a free estimate from them. Some have posted that dealers may match Carmax or offer less.

With all the horror stories I hear about Carmax I wouldn't go to them for anything.

Depends on the dealership. I neighbor of mine used Carmax to sell his Rav4. He can no longer drive. He got what he considered a very reasonable offer. Carmax is like any other dealership. Some are good, some are bad. When I purchased my 06 Tacoma, one Toyota dealer was high pressure, bait and switch type operation. Needless to say I walked and went elsewhere.

That said, I do tend to trade in. In AZ you pay sales tax on the difference, not the total of the new car. Most times the amount I could get for a 10 year old trade by selling it myself is not worth my time. Yes, a bit more money, but when I consider my time and hassle.

You would be different with only having a 1 year old vehicle.

Take a look at Edmunds, KKB, TrueCar and see what they say for a trade.

Took my 2014 in for the hell of it.
The dealer low balled me big time. Almost worse than a craigslist lowball offer.

When it's time to sell I will probably go private party for sure.

Yeah he told me there is no real interest in the 15's as the 16's are out and selling like hot cakes. Yet they have had the same 2 sitting in the front for over a month
