I am getting frustrated with backup camera for my 2013 single cab base model taco. I first bought a camera from Amazon that came with wiring kit but I discovered I already had a 4 pin factory connector in my tailgate, so I returned it and got a plug n play can from eBay. I installed and plugged into my existing 4club connector but I do not get a picture in my radio or rear view mirror. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks

I got tricked into thinking my truck was pre wired also cause I had the 4 prong wire inside tailgate. But you have to go under truck at tailgate and follow the wire from tailgate, just barely past tailgate on passenger side you will see where that wire plugs into and goes toward cab. If the plug there has 4 wires present it is pre wired, but if it only shows 1 blue wire it is not pre wired. And mine only has the 1 blue wire. I don’t know why the crap Toyota would put a wire inside tailgate and nowhere else.

Does your mirror or radio actually have the part that displays what the camera sees? My 2012 reg cab was pre-wired but I added a radio so I can view the image.

On the 12 and 13 models the display is in the mirror. You can buy a kit on camerasource.com to move it to radio. But if you put a 14 or newer radio in, the plug for the camera input on radio changed and you would have to get that plug from camera source also

The camera re-location kit is $69 and is for the 2010-2013 Tacoma’s on camera source. Part number is SKU:CS-TAC-CH and like I said earlier if you put a 14 or newer radio in you will need to buy SKU:CSH-14TAC-24P-FH interface kit $40, and use that plug for back of radio. You will have to cut the plug on the 13 kit and splice the wires in the same exact location on the 14 kits plug and will work just fine

Yes, I have a '13 5 lug that was pre wired.

I used an OE camera and an OE mirror that plugs into the harness in the headliner above the dome

This year model does not work in the dash natively, only in the rearview.

In addition to the camera and mirror, you'll want the harness garnish that goes between the mirror and headliner.

Rear view mirror harness trim 87818-04010 Toyota calls it 'wire cover upper Tacoma' or 'cover, inner RR view'

Jeebus, the combination of pre-wiring options, displays, radios etc. for the late 2nd-gen gives me a headache!! My base model 12 has zero niceties. So far I have just added a intermittent wiper switch, a crappy WM BT adapter, and a cheap Amazon backup camera with a display I can't really mount anywhere very well.

I thought my radio did but now I am not so sure. My tailgate has a pre-wired 4 wire plug. I went past tailgate and checked and I have 4 wires going forward to cab, so now I am sure it's the radio.

I went past tailgate and checked and I have 4 wires going forward to cab, so now I think I either got to change radios or get some sort of adaptor for the radio. Thanks for input. You got my mind troubleshooting now.

Dumb question but just a thought, have you tried turning the rear view mirror on after installing camera. Don’t exactly remember for sure how to turn the backup part on in the mirror but I believe you just hold the auto button in for a few seconds

    That's not
That's not a dumb question because I do stuff like that. My truck has a plain jane mirror.

Check the fuse box behind the change tray to see if you have these two connectors.
More importantly, is anything plugged into them. Trucks that are prewired have these connectors.
The other side of them either go up the A-pillar (mirror) or the dash (radio).
The single wire is reverse, the four wires are the actual camera.

    camera.jpg

You can also pull the A-pillar trim and see what wires are in that plug which lead to the headliner.
2013 had the display in the mirror, 2014 on had the display in the radio.

The button on the rear view mirror enables/disables auto dimming to reduce glare from lights behind you. There is no control for a rear view camera on the mirror. The screen simply turns on when you engage reverse (if you have the right mirror).

The "13" model Taco's, (non reg. cab) did show the image thru the mirror, but the "13" radios were also capable of showing the camera image. The above mentioned harness from camera source should come with instructions to move the image from the mirror to the radio. So far I've not seen nor heard of a "13" "reg. cab" with a factory back-up camera, even tho some, including mine, were pre wired for one. I have the harness, just waiting for my radio shop to get it installed. Starting to get impatient.

You guys are great. The knowledge base is amazing. I followed Havoc's advise and finally checked fuse box and it shows the correct connectors and wiring. I pulled radio out and so will attch pics so hopefully one of you will know if the radio model is good for camera or if I am missing a hookup at radio. Thanks and I can purchased a new radio if needed. Also, there is a chance the camera is bad out of box from eBay. Thanks all!!!! Happy cinco we mayo!!!!
