    Ive seen this so many times and I have to step in and correct you. Everyone keeps getting hung up on the "cold air" part of the aftermarket intakes out there. Yes colder/more dense air does improve horsepower but that is not where the true gains of the intakes are at.

    The real benefits of the TRD or similar intakes is the less restrictive airway path into the engine. The TRD intake is a straight shot compared to the stock intake which is full of tight bends, smaller inner diameter tubing, etc. When those imperfections are removed you get more power. THAT is why someone would want one

    There's no measurable benefit on a normally aspirated engine. The intake is "less" restrictive... but it is less restrictive than "already good enough"

    The increase in silicon contamination in the oil can be measured at every oil change.

    Maybe you need to read around more then. There are a few intakes out there producing 15+ rwhp. Some even more with a tune. The benefits are even greater when paired with a TRD supercharger. 1/4 mile trap speed proof is also there.

    If you dont believe it I cant help you. Keep using that stocker..its just more aftermarket intakes for the people who know the facts.

    and if your only concern is "oil contamination" then use an amsoil dry filter...problem solved

    Posting dyno charts from the manufacturer's web sites is like claiming political campaign promises are going to solve all of your problems.


    Now try posting some independent charts from trucks that have ONLY had the intakes modded and showing comparable gains.

    You won't, because they don't exist.

    I've been reading "around here", and on other forums for over 10 years.
    Claims by CAI manufacturers are 100% bullshit.

    ^^^ this is true Dyno'd my R32 with and without my cold air and the gains were very minimal 1 to 3 hp maybe (never ever close to 15 thats for sure)....all hype really.....

    "There are two CARB certified intakes for the 1GR-FE engine.

    The first one is from AirAid. The way this one works is you remove the stock air filter from the air filter box and replace it with a plastic frame which is pretty much the same thing as the stock filter with the filter media removed. Then you replace the large rubber tube that connects the air filter box to the fender with a cone filter. In this configuration the stock air filter box and the carbon trap stay.

    In my dyno testing, I have tested all kinds of different configurations of the stock air filter box, the rubber tube off, the lid off, the filter out, the filter and carbon trap out and none of that made any difference in power. It is the air filter box its self that is restrictive and the way it makes the air turn and twist around a few times before it gets to the flow straightener in front of the MAF sensor. So replacing the rubber tube with a cone filter is not going to gain power and you will be turning it into a hot air intake. I would suggest that you not waste your money on this one.

    The next is the NEW version of the TRD intake. It is pretty much a copy of the air filter box from the new 1GR-FE air filter box from the 2010 FJ and 4Runner. It uses the same filter and the same carbon trap. I have dyno tested this intake and there is increased power. I have also found a serious problem with it. It induces a serious error in the MAF sensor reading and jacks the fuel tirms out of sight and makes the engine run really lean at full throttle. At first I had hoped it was just the one intake I tested, but I have seen results from a good many now from all over the country and the all seem to be screwed up.

    Here is my suggestion. Get the aFe Stage 2si intake. This is very much the same as the earlier TRD intake that is NOT CARB approved. I have them in stock. I have dyno tested a gain of 12 RWHP on my 2006 4Runner. It is not CARB approved, but it takes 10 minutes to remove it and reinstall the stock air filter box when you need to smog your truck if you are in Cali."

    you will have a hard time finding individuals with enough money to blow on dyno runs just to show intake gains..that would be silly...this does not mean that they dont exist. case in point....URD sells these things and has the means to test them for our benefit

    Dyno runs are not that expensive, and clubs frequently put together "dyno days" where everyone chips in $40 and gets 2 or 3 runs.

    Im arguing with a brick wall here. Just keep that stock intake right where it is. Make sure you send a letter to Toyota and thank them for designing the most incredible, free flowing, coldest, miraculously engineered stock intake of all time.

    Feel free to send a letter to K&N and AEM thanking them for designing air filters that allow damaging levels of silicon into your engine while providing marginal at best gains. ;)
