I know there's a zillion 'backup camera' related threads, as I think I've read them all.

At the end, I bought one of these:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zOQoh0oyvY

... from Camera Source.

Took me about an hour to install, including reading the directions and watching the vid.

The result is attached. Plug n Play. I did NOT need to remove my head unit. Just plugged their kit into the existing plug.

Now, let's see if I can back into something tomorrow.

I bought the oem one from eBay for $250. It was plug and play, about 5 minutes. Totally worth it.

Well.... that's one I didn't see... and this did cost be a little bit more than that (maybe $270... can't remember exactly), but I did get a PopnLock with it.

The folks at Camera Source were very nice to deal with, BTW.

My dealer would've been happy to install one, for only $574. Good grief.

I'm in the market as well and considering the Pop'nLock version as well as the one from Rostra.

Frobozz- is yours a CCD or CMOS? How's the low-light image?

splitsecond- did your camera plug into the existing wiring in the tailgate? I'd like to avoid running wires to the front and popping the head unit.

Thanks guys!

Yes. It was really plug and play. I'll try take a few pics or make a tutorial but not necessary I think (elementary 5-10 minute install). You just unscrew the plastic tailgate. The old camera place holder is just a cap with a plug. Two 10mm bolts hold in the plastic camera holder and those same two bolt down the oem camera. It plugs right in and comes right on when in reverse (all pre-wired).

It was actually 265 I think on ebay (shipping included). The part number is 86790-04020 . My local dealer was asking $750; must be high since it is all pre-wired and plug 'n play and you are paying not only for the camera but for the right to use their work completed.

The eBay seller is midwestgreenparts@gmail.com, doesn't always have auctions for it. He was selling 86790-04010 (2013 below) camera and I asked if he had the '14 ones and he did. Those two have a different plug in the back and will not work with the factory run wires. If he doesn't have, just google the part number and there are some online places selling it for $400ish. Might be worth it in my opinion, since it comes with the backup lines, easy install, peace of mind, etc.

Let me know if you got any other questions.

Aloha,

Dale

I'm confused here, I thought all 2014 trucks came with at the very least the base entune radio which included the backup camera? is that not true?

Here's the link for the camera I purchased.
https://camera-source.com/products/...backup-camera-factory-radios-opt-pop-and-lock

I note it says "Super CMOS sensor, high quality color, contrast, clarity and only available from Camera Source".

I have not yet tried it at night so cannot say. Perhaps I'll give 'er a rip tonight and report back. It looked fine at 7:00pm last night, but that was 1/2 or so prior to sunset.

The radio is capable of displaying the image from a mounted camera, but not all configurations actually include the camera.

Well, I'm not sure I'd go with the all, but mine was. The guys at Camera Source indicate that it's rare, but occasionally a radio needs to be pulled and something done behind it, and they have the appropriate kit and instructional vids when that is required.

It was not necessary for me to do that. It just worked, fortunately. .

It was my understanding that all 2014 vehicles had to have a backup camera I guess that is why I'm confused here... I didn't realize you could even

1. Get a 2014 vehicle WITHOUT the base entune 6.1 screen
2. Get one without a backup camera

I have a 2014 and there is no backup camera... The tailgate handle is made to have it, not sure if it's prewired though. Is there a way to check other than ripping everything apart?

I think that "every vehicle will require a backup camera" thing kicks in 2018.

Yes. Try these first, although taking off the plastic tailgate cover is a snap with a power drill and star bit

1. Does your bed have a yellow sticker on the passenger side towards the end? (yes is good)

2. Does your tail gate have a black wire loom looking wire coming out the passenger side bottom when open? (yes is good)

3. Does your screen say check for warnings, wait for camera to load, etc. when starting up the vehicle? (yes is good)

If all those are yes, chances are pretty good. Finally take off the cover and see if you have the wire. It will be plugged into that plastic square piece where the camera would be. It is a six prong plug with only 4 wires. My guess to what the wires are +, -, video feed, and turn on feed (probably hooked up to reverse lights/signal). That's why it doesn't go on even though it is pre-wired.

Hope this helps. It will be plug and play if you buy the oem camera, I did. I heard some guys use after market ones that change out the whole handle and plug into the factory plug.

Good luck, let me know if you got any questions.

Aloha,

Dale

So here is what my trucks wiring looks like. I think it may be pre-wired as everything is tied into other wiring. If anyone else could help me out or had something similar and installed a camera, could you please Message me or post on this forum please? Thanks everyone

Be careful with back up cameras.
My wife now only uses the camera to back up, ignoring everything to the left and right.
I'm expecting an insurance claim anytime now.

My wife is the same way. But she loves in her own strange bubble sometimes. I remind her that it is only one tool and that her mirrors and looking around is also necessary

My 2014 didn't come with the backup camera and I paid the dealership that I purchased the truck from to install the factory camera but the dealership instead installed a cheap piece of crap license plate mounted camera. the truck was delivered to my house while I was at work and my wife had no idea what to look for and didn't know. anyways I will be calling the dealership and in the meantime I purchased the factory camera off eBay and will install it myself since my truck is prewired for the factory camera. Once I get the camera I will do a write up with plenty of pictures that shows how to install one as well as the crap that the dealership installed.

Looks like I'm good to go for it, once I get the funds I'll get one and install it. Thanks for the help, and looking forward to the write up ^^.
