eMarshall, looks good. Do you see that message on the 6.1" screen when you start up the truck as well? That is what I had. Like I said the dealer is around $750. I found on ebay for $265 (seller listed above). Still expensive for just a camera. But you have figure you are not only paying for the camera, but the right to use the all work done already. It was really plug and play. I took off the plastic tailgate, disconnected the wire that is connected to that black piece. It was 2 10mm bolts holding it in, and then bolted in the new camera and connected it.

I have been busy so didn't get around to taking pics on how to install, but it is a very elementary install. Hope this helps.

    Aloha,

    Dale

At the advice of FroBozz i went with a camera from CameraSource

I opten for the Pop and Lock option, $284.00 plus shipping. SKU: CS-14TAC-5400.

I'll update with pics once installed, but CS currently has the unit on backorder (est. 2 weeks before in-stock).

Glad this worked out. I wasn't sure when Dale purchased the cam if it would fall directly into a 2014. It appears that its good to go. Thanks a bunch, and I'm glad it worked out. I have some more of the 2014's.

Interesting post as I would really like to ad a camera, My truck is an "09" & has all of the above (although I have not checked the radio yet) When I purchased the truck (new) included with the paper work were these connectors, anyone know if these will be of any help to me, Thanks!!

You guys know as much as I do about this stuff. I'm just here to try to contribute what I can. Toyota has two part numbers and the parts look the same, but the back connectors are different, and the shape is near the same, but the 86790-04020 camera is a bit smaller.

Note that the older version, 86790-04010, which I know works in an 09, has four prongs in the harness connector, and it has five little slots all the way around the harness perimeter.

The newer version, 86790-04020, which was successfully used on this board in a plug an play works on a 2014. This harness connector has 6 prongs, and more of a bottom clip.

Here's hoping your install is as easy as mine.

Good information, Thanks, I have a 09 & is the four prong. also my manual shows the camera (image) to be located in the rearview mirror, so it would appear my radio would not be compatible, jmop

I have the same as eMarshall also. Plugged in the 86790-04020 camera part. Doesn't work yet. Do I need video cable harness in the touch screen unit?

I'm assuming you have a 2014. What package do you have? I had an SR, and also convenience package. Did you have those warnings on the 6.1" screen too?

    Hmm.

With the '09 I think the camera screen was on the rear view mirror. So will probably not be plug and play like mine was.

I'm curious to how you got 86790-04020 plugged into an 09. Did I read that correctly?

Bought the below setup on ebay. It was from a 2010 taco. Put in my 2014 prerunner double cab. Had to replace the 6 pin harness inside the tailgate with the 4 pin that came with it. The 4 pin harness connects with no problems to harness under truck.

    Ok Mr. Dale

I got yes's on all the above however; I got this too in the glove compartment that came with my 2014 Double cab 4x4

So I don't need this is what your implying?

Simply install camera for 2014 model on tailgate and I should be good to go?

    See pic below..don't need these?

Yeah, I got those as well. Didn't use them. The unit I purchased from Camera source included a harness, with a male or female connector (I forget which) that plugged into the existing connector of the opposite gender that was mounted to the frame near the rear bumper, passenger side. I think I pulled the existing harness, that was pre mounted and routed within my tailgate back into the tailgate and secured it with tape, then routed the new one, supplied by CS through the tail gate, out through the tail gate opening and then connected the new one back into the existing connector mounted on the frame.

The vid I posted in my OP is really pretty good.

Those are covers for when removing the tailgate to cover the connections to prevent dirt from getting in them. [IMG]

I bought a '14 DC SR that didn't come with a backup camera but had an entune unit and pre-wiring. The dealer had no clue and told me it would be $600 to add the camera when I asked if it was prewired.

I drove home and ordered the xxxx420 camera (6 pin) from Midwest Green on eBay and got the part in 2 days. My truck had the camera warning when turning it on, wiring showing when tailgate was open as well as the yellow warning sticker next to the tailgate so I was pretty sure all I needed was the camera.

As far as the install goes, I just removed all the tailgate screws and took the cover off. Next I removed the two 10mm bolts holding the blank that was in the camera slot. Probably the hardest part is disconnecting the connector from the blank without breaking it. I ended up using a fishing hook. From there all you do is put the camera where the blank is and install the two 10mm bolts and connect the prewired harness. Before I closed up the tailgate cover, I turned on the truck and put it in reverse. Everything was plug and play and the total install time was less than 10 mins. I recommend Midwest Green if you are looking to do this upgrade. (Fast shipping, quick responses). PM me if you need help. Probably one of the easiest installations I've done.
