The weather services are free, but HD is not available in all areas, only near large metropolitan areas. Yesterday, while driving in San Jose, the HD radio said that it was 68 outside. My new OHC display showed that the temperature was actually 93, which was the correct temperature!

Thanks I will try and contact them again, I hate the dealer I went to. They even tried to tell me the truck didn't come with floor mats. Who knows what else they a hiding.

Yeah, I live on Hilton Head Island, SC. Savannah GA is about 30 minutes away, but all in all, Hilton Head usually has quality communications for the most part, I.E. cell towers.

That sucks that I won't ever be able to use the features with the HD signals. But then again, I really don't need to know how hot it is at the local airport, which is what the HD would tell me, it's really only helpful if the gauge is on the vehicle for accuracy.

Ohh well, I am not complaining, I just feel like there are a lot of features on the 14 that I will never use. I.E. The DVD player screen. It will only play in Park from what the manual says. It would be great for my 2 year old daughter, who has her car seat in the middle of the double cab so she would have a perfect view. But I don't spend much time hanging out in the truck when it's parked. The HD radio won't work and there is no working weather or traffic app.

Ohh well... I didn't have any of those features in my 12' just the gauge.

I have about 500 miles on a '14 with offroad package and no gauge!! Anyone make a blue tooth gauge of some sort so no expensive installs?

So afer going a few rounds with my Dealer, we determined the harness for the temp/compass mirror is not there. Next alternative was a $500 aftermarket mirror harness nightmare... got to be a better way..

Last year my freezer went on the fritz... I was desperate to monitor internal temps as I did not trust the fix... put my "weatherstation" outdoor sensor in my freezer to see if it would transmit... it worked!

So that means these wireless temp sensors actually have some guts...

    Fast forward... similar application... TACOMA

Walmart Acu-Rite wireless Thermometer model 00380...display fits perfectly in 1/2 of one of the overhead eyeglass pods... with a 1.5" LCD display.... looks factory and if you don't want to see it close the compartment.

Mounted the sensor (a bit of trial and error) just inboard of the right headlight and outboard of the grillopenings on a nice piece of ABS out of direct rain but lots of airflow. Used 3M locking Velcro and a wire tie tether just in case...

Works perfectly, looks good. $10 and about a 20 minute install.

3 days of use, display updaes every 30 seconds and I've got 5 bars of signal from the remote.

If these units are anything like I use on my motorcycles, battery life is about 18 months (2AA, 2AAA). Worst case scenario is I replace the whole thing every 6 months... for $10...

ps. I may drown the sensor...but only if I do a water crossing that is 6 inches OVER the top of my tires...

    Things I need to tow.
I've used these units for years in several vehicles. Here are my notes:

I've always mounted the outside sensor in a door jamb (with Velcro). Its semi-protected but make sure the door clears it when you open it or you'll crush it. (Don't ask how I know.) Batteries only last six months. I replace them in both units at the same time. I like having both an inside and outside temp display, but don't mount the unit where the sun will shine directly on it or you'll never get an accurate inside temp. (I painted one black, but you REALLY have to keep it out of the sun.) Wish they were illuminated, but for the $10 they cost I can forgive it.

Me too - the only temp reading on my '14 TRD OR is on the Entune screen, under the "Weather" section.

Yes, I have a post on this. My 2014 has a 2013 mirror that was swapped out of my 2013. I now have compass, but no temp other then Entune because the wire for temp does not exist in the headliner. This leads me to another question.

In previous years I am told that temp came from the sensor behind the grille via "Canbus". My 2014 has the same temp sensor behind the grille, and I assume that it is tied to Canbus as well. Apparently Canbus is a communications network that is in the Toyota that allows data to be shared. The sensor apparently is shared with the ECM as well. That being the case and the sensor is actually local, why can't temperature be shown if the satellite signal drops out?

I have not tested it, but I believe that the signal from the temperature sensor can be taken from the A14 connector located behind and above the glove box. You should route two wires from the connector: 1) tap the violet/white wire (Speed Indicator) connected to pin 2 of A14; 2) Insert a new yellow wire (temperature sensor) into pin 27 of A14. Run the two wires to I8, compass/temp indicator connector. Again, I have NOT tested this configuration, so I am not certain that it will work.

The process that I used is documented at http://lucidcc.com/Overhead Console.pdf. This process works extremely well.

When HD signal is not available, the system is supposed to default to your cell signal to download both weather and traffic. That's what it is supposed to do- have had mine checked by dealer as it does not use my cell when phone is known to be connected. The issue with troubleshooting is that the dealership has hd signal, so it's difficult foe them to see what I see when out of HD range. And their is no cost for that data other then data usage on your phone. I am still trying to get it resolved.

I would like to install a wireless thermometer similar to this. Has anyone tried installing the sensor in the bed under a side rail?

I traded in my 2012 Tacoma in for a 2014 LIMITED.
I expected all upgrades. HOWEVER, there is no outside temperature gauge in the mirror like my 2012 had. This feature was advertised on the TOYOTA site for the 2014.
I live in up north in Vermont and I always use a temperature gauge so I know when it falls below freezing.
I am a very unhappy customer, I brought the problem up with my salesman and he said to stick a thermometer on to my mirror!! I put in a formal complaint with Toyota and they said they can not help me either.
Disgruntled customer looking for a fix to this - I want the outside temperature gauge installed in my mirror like my last truck had. any help how I can do this?

Don't forget to look at this solution for a 2005-2009 Overhead Console with Compass and Outside Temperature Gauge.

I filed a complaint with my Toyota Regional Office in Denver. My complaint was forwarded to someone in CA. She said that Toyota does not custom build their vehicles for its customers. Despite this, she said that she would look into my request. Perhaps a little community will influence future designs of Toyota. It is clear that she either does not understand or care about the importance of the Outside Temperature Sensor and Compass. I've listed her name and address below if you would like to start a letter campaign:
