    Hi All,

I am considering installing a Supercharger on my Tacoma. I need the extra hp and torque for high elevation performance towing a 4,000LB trailer. The kit comes with and with out a tuner.
Is the tuner necessary? No offense, but it sounds like gadget to me and I am not really interested in changing shift points, etc.
Also, it sounds like the stock air intake is inadequate.

I will put the $500.00 towards a TRD exhaust system.

I appreciate any comments or advice.

    Thanks Jhot52

A trd style super or urdusa one? The Toyota one was not impressive to me.But a smaller pulley plus more worth it.Again 05 2 08.check with gadget at urdusa first.Take it from their.

    Thanks for the response HTB,

I am considering a Magnason SC. Who is urdusa?
What I have found out is that the TRD SC was made by Eaton and the Magnason uses their technology. It's set up for my Tacoma so why would I need to change tuning? No instructions in Magnason installation for tuning, just says enjoy your SC.

    Thanks jhot52

Wont run those injectors correctly without a reflash i believe.

Scratch that trd exhaust imho, get a 3" system.

any time you push pull or squeeze more air into the engine, you need more fuel for it.

yes an engine is an air pump, and the more you can move the more power you will make BUT, it is actually related to how much more fuel you can burn efficiently.

with that said, (and i dont know how good the tunes are or how bad) if you are cramming more air into the engine, it needs more fuel. gone are the days of the old vortech FMU. get the tuner or a reflash or whatever is available for these trucks. i left mine stock in that aspect so i have done 0 research on that subject for our trucks.

    thats just my o.o2

It comes with injectors..... i just think the stock ecu wont push em correctly and will lean the engine out unless a flash or tuner is used.

Course the fuel pump upgrade is a sore topic..... so, i wont get into that.... its as bad as "who makes the best intake" topics

    Thanks Guys,

I talked with Toyota about this. The guy seems to have it together. He told me the ecu will learn the air fuel etc on its own.
It comes with larger injectors and colder spark plugs. The tuner unit instructions dosen't discuss anything about flashing the ecu nor does the install instructions for the SC. I have a email into underdog asking for advice. Will inform when I get a response. The tuner can be purchased anytime.

    Thanks jhot52

Run don't walk away from that tech, he is completely wrong. You need to tune for the supercharger, the stock tune will not run well and most likely kill the engine. Adding a CAI or exhaust you can get away with no tune but will see little performance gains. Changing spark plugs, injectors and boost then you ABSOLUTELY need a tune. You can see if any dealers will load the OEM Flash for the TRD supercharger but they may be hesitant with it being discontinued. Also I don't know if it works with the injectors that are provided in the magnusson kit.

You can get the kit from Magnason with or without the bully dog tuner. The ecu needs a flash no matter what because of the bigger injectors. You can install the s/c then have toyota reflash it with the TRD tune or use the Bully dog and be done with it. The truck will run without a tune, but it will be on the rich side. I installed mine myself then drove the truck to toyota after.

I think you can still get it flashed. They stopped that on 2016+ I believe, but Magunson has a tuner they send (BullyDog) to run the specific tune.

Your install time will be like 1/4 the time too I believe. On Tundras it's between 10-15 hours.

Well, this is what they do for Tundras. I presume Tacomas are the same. Where are you looking at purchasing your S/C from?

Wow, thanks everyone for the responses!

I plan on purchasing SC from Underdog.
Steve, aka "Gadget" stated that the ECU has to be flashed. I read the Magnuson warranty a little closer and SC warranty is void if you don't use theirs.

I was just trying to understand if I needed to purchase the tuner. I like saving money like everyone else does.
But in this case I have to pay to play!

Wish Toyota would put a diesel in the Tacoma with decent torque specs...

Thanks again for your help! Jhot52

Unless they finally released a tuning option for the 09-15 tacomas, i would assume he's just buying the manussson through them. The urd S/C bolts onto his truck but then no way to tune it.

How much for toyota to reflash, since gadgets magnuson kit has no tuner?

He sells it with or without the bullydog tuner, and for reflash it all depends on the dealer.

I would trust the Toyota tune over whatever is on the bullydog, unless it's the same tune just copied onto the handheld.

    Thanks Everyone,

I plan on buying the Magnuson SC. The 6K kit comes with a tuner. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I just plug it in, following the instructions and up load the new tune to the ECU.

Did not know Gadget offers their own SC.
They do offer their own tune. But Mag voids the warranty unless theirs is used.

    Thanks jhot52
