I have purchased a 2015 4.0L v6 with 35k miles in hope to replace my 2005 130k mile rod knocked motor in my long travel prerunner. I have read some threads saying I need to swap headers and head gasket for it to work. Will this motor bolt up and work with the 2005 headers, transmission and ECU? I will update this thread as the project begins. Is there any other information I need to have before I start the swap?

All transmissions 2nd gen are A750E so yes it'll work. As long as you use the PCM from your truck, and the exhaust manifolds you should be fine.

There may be more to this I'll let some other chime in on this, but as of right now you got a preliminary YES from me.

Both motors from 2005- 2015 are single VVTi 1GR-FE variants so short of the different exhaust I don't see why you would run into issues.

You shouldn't need to change head gaskets, but you will need to either reuse your existing exhaust or create block off plates for the newer one that uses the air injection system.

Beyond that it should be a direct bolt up swap I don't think there was any change in sensors or function between the years with the Tacoma's 1GR.

The FJ cruiser is in 4Runners got dual vvti but the Tacoma was always single.

So long as you got both motors you should have enough good parts to make one that works.

The heads are different from the air injection. So block off plates are a must. Don’t think the 05 manifolds will block the holes. So 15 manifolds with block off plates at the ends of the SAI tubes should work.

Other than that, that should be it, rest of the motor was unchanged.

well unless it was from a 4runner/FJ cruiser with the dual VVTI as posted above.

I have a 2015 engine in my 2006. I just pulled the header studs from the 06 engine and put them in the 15. Then bought URD spec u headers with 2015 header gaskets paired with their O2 simulator.
    Not carb friendly though
Also motor mount gussets as well as the upgraded motor mounts wouldn’t hurt for an 05

Anyone have a picture of the holes to be blocked off? And what're we talking about to block them off. Welding a plate on the headers or something to cover up this area?

what if I get 2015 long tube headers into my 2005 exhaust, would this eliminate the problem?

Yes and no. It would, but you’ll need some block off plates for the air tubes on the manifolds.

What route would need to be taken to eliminate the process of block off plates? or is that not an option?

Custom headers I’d assume. Never dealt with it… honestly block off plates are cheap. I’d just do thag

To eliminate ALL block off plates.
You’d need to swap heads from a 2005-2011 engine. Not worth it IMO.

Your options are find 2012+ Exhaust Manifolds. And block off the SAIS port.

Or buy headers with block offs.

URD spec U headers with 12-15 gaskets are the best way. It will block off the holes on the engine without any extra work

Take my 2005 headers with block off plates onto the 2015 motor is the easiest route?
