Mine just started after almost 2 years and 20k miles. 351 on back order, 4000 more ordered from manufacturer. My service manager said he was told about it at a Toyota corp meeting. 2-3 month wait to get the part, they have to replace the entire third brake light assembly. It was caused by a robot over torqing the gasket on double cabs. They told me to put clear packaging tape over it until it can be replaced. I called Toyota.. sorry about that sir but we can't do anything to speed up the process. I was told do not, do not try to seal it with silicone. It will void the warranty as trying to make a "permanent" repair.

Lemon law time. Black mold could grow on the damp seats and carpet so it's a safety issue.

Lemon Law requires a recurring issue with the same vehicle and you have to give the manufacturer time to fix it. This is his first incident. I would however bring up the fact that the inside did get soaked and there's the possibility of mold growth, at a minimum I might ask that they pay for a real cleaning. I doubt you'd win that argument though. Dealerships have no soul, Corporate even less.

For whatever it's worth they gave me a platinum extended warranty. 7 years $0 deductible for complaining tactfully about my issues. Fortunately they had records that I have been a Toyota customer since 1986 so I played the loyal customer you need to take care of me card.

My 2016 was built in Baja. Light seems to be the only issue.

I fixed mine myself(although I didn't have a problem yet) When installing my new 3rd brake light, I put a Bead of silicone around the edges and bolted it back in. No problems thus far

"BACKORDERED light for months" is a joke. THE LIGHT IS FINE. It's just the stupid gasket and the design. if TOYOTA really wanted to speed up the process they would redesign the gasket and just send them out to dealers. A lot cheaper than a brand new light assembly(that will probably have the exact same foam crappy gasket the stock one did)

Just happened to my 2017 4 door, 4x4 TRD OR and is only 3 months old. I noticed some dampness on the rear seats then lots more after a rain storm. Brought it to the dealer in RI and 2 weeks later this thing is a disassembled mess!

They confirmed that the rear light on the cab was the culprit and replaced it at once, and they pulled the entire interior out.

Toyota ordered a mold test (the cab smelled really bad when the pulled the carpet and headliner down) and now they are making the dealer hand scrape all of the black, tar like sound deadening material off the floors. They then need ServePro to come out and sanitize/disinfect the whole cab, reapply the sound deadening material, have another mold spore test done, then put in a whole new interior in! All for a bad $5.00 gasket at the cab light!

3-4 week wait due to no headliners available right now.

That sucks. My worst fear for a brand new truck is having someone ELSE rip it down to bare metal. Hopefully they are competent on fitting everything back like factory.

Just ran into this as well for my 2017 Tacoma. It has also caused water to run over top of the cab into floor board on driver side. I usually back into driveway that has an angle and finally noticed after some rain showers. I had it parked in the garage up until then. Unfortunately, that brake light is on back order . Seems like this is common...

Why hasn’t Toyota done anything to resolve such a low cost issue that really can damage your truck to keep customers happy and warranty costs down? Mine has done it and of course it is past the 36,000 mike mark so they want 207.00 to repair their manufacturing issue.

That sucks. I caught it early and who knows. They showed me the bill with labor and all. They ended up charging like $650 back to Toyota directly. To me, since they were on back order this should be more of a recall. Service at Toyota said it's not a recall but they have seen a lot? Is that not the same thing

Mine leaking too. Anybody want to get a class action suit going? I'm being ignored by dealer and Toyota.

That's a good question for Toyota... From the response from my dealer and from Toyota USA... They are denying an issue. So I doubt they have fixed. My opinion is leak is small and unnoticeable until after water has frozen over a winter and made leak point larger then dealer blames you for damage.

Mine did it after 3 months. 2 days at the dealer and it was all fixxed. The gaskets junk from the factory so they replace the gasket and add a little silicone where the wires go through. I haven’t had an issue since.

I just had my truck leaked everywhere a couple of weeks ago and it is still in the shop. They had to removed all the seats front/back, replaced the carpet. I will definitely get them to pay for my customer leather seats.
