Ok, so... I had my the truck cruising at 70mph today on the highway w/ cruise control on. The transmission began to do the usual constant downshifting over super small inclines and sometimes it wouldn't shift up to 6th gear on flat ground or downgrades and only stay in 5th. I slapped the shifter to manual and it went down to 4th automatically at about 3500 rpms. I then tried shifting twice to reach 6th but it wouldn't shift, even when tapping the gas. Eventually I got it to 6th, but there was a huge delay. First time I've done this on the highway. Anyone experience this?

Please don't make this another 16 bashing troll thread. This is my first auto in a small truck, I have always owned manuals.

2200 miles. Yes, I know the trans is solid. I know about the learning mode. It's the manual shifting I'm a little :notsure: and yes i know about the re-mapping.

That would be because it's not a manual mode really, more of a gear limiter. It doesn't let you select which gear to use, just what the maximum gear you want it to get to. So if you're going up hill in the wind and tell it to use 6th, it will still only get up to 4th. However, if you are going down hill and shift to 4th or 3rd to keep your speed constant it will prevent it from upshifting and you can maintain your speed.

I wish it was an actual manual mode, but that just isn't the case. It's the same as my '09 Tundra in that regard.

There is no manual shifting on the 2016. It is called sport shift and all is does is LIMIT what the top gear is. So if you have it in sport at 5th, the top gear will be limited to 5th gear. Also putting it into sport mode disables the eco part of the drive train.

I use manual mode or sport mode(whatever you like to call it) in my car with cruise control to limit all the stupid downshifting it would do in auto mode to go over overpasses or hills. I have manual trans in truck so there are no issues with using cruise control. Manual mode/sport mode in these is same thing - get it to whatever gear you want it to be in and it stays in that gear, whether cruise control is involved or your foot on the gas pedal. Same thing in the RAV4 using cruise control only worse because it has more gears to try to shift around thru in auto than my car has. Put it in manual mode and the hunting for gears stops.

People here are strangely defensive about the third gen. Even towards third gen owners who have spent the money and are critical of it. It's really weird. You'd think they were original designers of the vehicle.

i only use S mode from the time i get in the truck until i get out. around town driving i limit it to 5th and manual shift when i want. like on a incline instead of waiting for it to down shift to 4th or having to put my foot in it to get it to downshift i just use the gear shift.

OP... Mine started to do the EXACT same thing the other day..... Just like you say....when in Cruise and it downshifts to 5th and then go over the hill and it will not shift back up on it's own....

I checked the tranny fluid....was down 3/4 liter.... Issue has not come up since, but I have not put too many miles on with the cruise since. (maybe 4 times where it used to happen and has not now)...

I'm hoping I did fix the issue.
