2016 NASCAR thread

He seems like a solid dude. I was traveling through Emporia, VA two years ago and stopped for gas at an old service station. They had some old Sadler late model pics on the wall and the owner saw me taking pics of them with my phone. He and his wife pulled out two huge old scrapbooks with photos from the local bullring. Turns out they sponsored Elliot waaaaay back in the day and had all sorts of memorabilia and stories from his pre-NASCAR days. They used to host a roll-in show at their service station when the big Busch East cars rolled through town. The service station owner had newspaper clippings dating back to the '40s showing his grandpa, dad and himself racing modifieds and late models.

I feel it has a lot to do with the local market. They are either hardcore fans or meh might as well type fans. It is funny how TV Broadcasts try to hide it but can't. Even at the 2112 July Daytona race we were able to walk up to the ticket counter and buy Xfinity finish line tickets at the the perfect height 1 hr. before the race. There were thousands of people outside at the vendor venues that didn't go to the race.

 

It is great to see Morgan Sheppard #89 still running these races, he's in his 70's. Love the old school pics of him driving in wingtip dress shoes!

 

Maybe if they lowered ticket and ESPECIALLY camping prices (some tracks I have not been too I have heard are very high) and put NASCAR on a regular channel their ratings would go up.... but that's none of my business

 

I think the chase is a great format but I think what kills it for a lot of fans is when one person (48) wins 6 straight titles or when one team dominates the season like JGR is right now. Eliminate Cup drivers from competing in the Xfinity races to gain an added advantage for their Cup teams and oh yeah, a lot of Jeff Gordan fans have left the sport or lost some interest in it. The most popular driver Dale Jr needs to win a title and be dominate to keep fans in the stands.$.02

You are right about jimmie johnson winning so much when he was dominating I would just turn the radio or tv off. They let cup drivers in the busch races to actually spark interest in those races, but I guess that kind of backfired.

 

I don't have a problem with cup drivers in Xfinity Cars....

 

I can see why since the m&m boy wins so much in that series.

 

They don't "let"cup drivers in xfinity races. Mostly sponsors requiring them to race in some of those races to sustain the sponsorship throughout the season. If they don't drive, then the sponsor won't commit for x number of races. NASCAR is so sponsor dependent now, even down to what a driver looks like and acts like to represent a brand that it has killed a lot of what the sport was.

In other news, for the race this afternoon, the 11,18,19 look to be the best again. 2,4,78 closest to them but need something extra to compete.

Due to many of the aforementioned reasons I have lost almost all interest in NASCAR.
The only reason I still know what's going on is because MrsTACO still turns on the races.
We used to go to them several times a year & watch every one on TV.
It just doesn't draw me in anymore.

 

The NBA has announced they will allow sponsors on jerseys for the 2017-2018 season. Silver said it would generate $100 million, 1/2 of which would go into team sharing.
It will be interesting to see what kind of backlash this causes!
The post race interviews with a driver saying the "v,w,x,y & z no __ car was awesome today" make me cringe!

Damn, can NASCAR put anyone in the stands?!!! Looks awful empty.....

 

Snooze fest.....I wouldn't go to this race ever, can't see the track but in one section and the racing is non existent, only racing is off pit road and 1 lap after restarts.

 

I don't think there's anything NASCAR can do to fix it. Unfortunately, it's just the archaic design of the speedway. The only thing I can think, which should be applied across the board, is slow the cars down 30-40mph, raise the cars up (getting rid of splitter, side skirts, etc), chop the spoiler (done), make the tires skinnier and softer. And for extra giggles, smaller displacement V8s or hell, that new 3.5 twin turbo V6 like the '17 Raptor will have.

 

#21 was first car lap down. Opted not to take wave around in exchange for a pit stop. Restarting p24 but 15+ cars took wave around and will have to pit in next few laps. Blaney can mathematically make it the rest of the way with that Penske motor.

 

I look forward to seeing the post-race inspection findings on that #18. I've never seen a car hook up that well and rocket away 10-20 car lengths within 1.5 laps and extend the lead by 1 second a lap. That's just nuckin futs.
