Most will buy one or the other based on looks, paint color, wheels...Not the mechanics.
And many will buy based on equipment.

Example: buyer go to dealership looking for a red Tacoma, spots a sport in red and thinks that's the one...until he sees the blue off road has navigation and sunroof.

Blue is his new favorite color.

I would have gone your route IF I could have got the OR with a LB in a DC. Unfortunately, Toyota and/or Toyota Canada decided we should only get the ORACLB no DC LB OR or DCSB. The double cab was a must have for me so I had to compromise. The locker and crawl wold have been nice although I frankly doubt I would ever have a need for either. I will use the LB more and the DC for certain. Either way the rather expensive truck will do everything I will need it to do for the next 10 years if I live that long. I pick her up today and will post pics. Life is good.

I am forced into getting the Sport as I want an access cab with a manual. The Off-oad only comes with a manual in a double cab. WTF was Toyota thinking? :facepalm:Currently there are only 5 manual access cabs in the entire state of California, so I'm going to have to place an order.

Canadians are lucky they can get the OR access cab with a manual.

Toyota's "Auto LSD" is no different that the brake-based traction control system used in literally every other vehicle currently on the market. It's just they are the only ones that call it an "LSD", when it's really just electronic traction control. Other automakers reserve "LSD" to refer to mechanical clutch-based systems. The brake-based ones work, but the sensation is pretty jarring vs. the "slingshot out of a corner" sensation you get with a mechanical LSD.

Even better are the torque-vectoring systems available on most recent Porsches, Audi S4, Focus RS, etc. Those actually overdrive the outside wheel in a corner, which allows you to corner in ways that seem to defy the laws of physics. But we're talking about a truck here, so I don't think anyone wants that.

Same goes for me - I thought the black fender trim looked bad on anything other than a black truck. I'm sure you could change it out if you wanted, but I liked the look of the sport better, and I'm not going to need the off road oriented features anyway.

Ok, I'm officially confused. The Sport and the Off Road have the same engine. The only performance difference might be the gear ratio so there shouldn't be a 70hp difference unless I've missed something.

I don't know what to do...

I don't want to choose a truck based off of cosmetics...

I want the additional features of the OR, but can't stand the black fenders. I feel like if I go w/ Sport, I'll regret it. I may just go OR and either paint the fenders or buy the OEM Sport fenders and put them on myself. Can I even do that? Thoughts?

I finally bought. The TRD sport.....test drove both OR and sport. .....for what I need, the sport drives better. ...still adjusting to a lot of things that my 1998 and 2000 vehicles didn't have....but I'm quite happy with it!! As for mods.......it seems that if it has been thought of, it can be done!!!

curious, was there a difference in rear axle ratio? 4.10 for off road, and 3.92 for sport?

    Neither is correct. V6 Auto gets 3.909 with I4 auto getting a 4.30, V6 Manual gets 4.30 with I4 manual getting a 3.909.

    See attached.

cool spec sheet! thanks. I do believe my salesman mislead me or just pretended know, ha! That was one factor for getting the sport (better gas mileage because of favorable rear axle ratio)

good to learn that. I always thought that off road would have stiffer suspension to soak up big bumps/holes on the trails. Maybe I should have got the off road...even though I don't off road. However, the all-terrain tires could make more road noise compared to the sport's all season tires....right?

I was in the same boat. Ended up going with the one with the functionality that I wanted, now I can paint the fenders. Painting the fenders isn't a big deal, someone on the forum has already done this. If you do want painted fender flairs it might be better to buy primed ones from the dealer because the primed ones I think are made out of a different material. Honestly, the black fenders are starting to grow on me so I don't know if I will be having them painted. Also the OR rides much better in my opinion, I found that the sport's ride was a lot stiffer like riding in a sports car.

depends on manual transmission or not. The manual has a 4.3 gear. The automatic is 3.9. But that is not limited to sport of OR
