I did trans and both diffs at 40k on my truck. I'll probably do them again at 100k (or when I get bored, whichever comes first)

Never from a stop, on occasion if I was still rolling it would be hard to get in. It was also noticeably different after I changed trans fluid

Have you tried letting the clutch out a little, push back, then putting in gear ? Haven’t had any issues with mine.

I am about to nip some of these tranny gremlins in the budd. Mr mailman just brought me 10 M18x1.5 magnetic plugs and the Redline MTL for the xfer case and MT-90 for the transmission.

Is today the day for the 1.05 drop???

Not so much the brand, but the spec that Toyota recommends.

I don't know what it is off hand, but I'm sure it's in the owner's manual or the SM..

I have on occasion, but usually only if I'm rushing it or it's still cccold.

The more miles you put on, the smoother everything gets.

Depress clutch, shift to neutral, let out clutch, depress clutch, shift into first.

That doesn't always work for me. I occasionally get locked out of first gear. It usually requires letting the truck roll forward a bit.

This is normal. Just shift to 2nd real quick and back to 1st. OR you can shift to neutral, clutch in then out and back to 1st.

I had that happen to me multiple times. Not sure it’s because of my short shifter or something.

Have the same issue. The Tacoma seems a little worse than all the manual transmissions I’ve owned over three decades of driving, but they all suffered from it to some degree. It’s just normal for this truck.
It has gotten better on mine at 10K miles. Switched to Redline MT90, that also helped some. I think as the miles pile up it will continue to get better.
I don’t force it into gear, just let it break in on its own.
The Tacoma MT calls for GL3/4. I wouldn’t use GL5.

Might want to swap out the GL5 in the tranny if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time.

    2. What happens if API GL-5 gear oil is used in an API GL-4 gear oil application?

"API GL-4 and API GL-5 products typically use the same extreme pressure (EP) additive system, with the API GL-5 having about twice the concentration of a API GL-4. In service, these additives become active under extreme load and temperature when the protective oil film can be squeezed away. EP additives work by forming wear-resistant compounds with the metal of the gear tooth surface. As the gears mesh, these compounds shield the gear teeth from direct metal-to-metal contact that would cause wear and damage to the gears. If too little of the active additive is present, proper protection would be compromised. Too much of this additive could cause excessive chemical corrosion of the gear surface. If an API GL-5 gear oil is used in an application where API GL-4 gear oil is called for, chemical corrosion of "yellow metal" components may occur, such as bronze synchronizers, brass bushings, etc. This may lead to shifting difficulties or shortened equipment life."
