Is anyone else getting any odd behavior every once in a while? Like hesitations or misses? It's not alot and not something I can re create but I am getting them from time to time. It will cause the truck to buck back and forth some.

I occasionally still get some less than smooth power delivery, I dont know if what I have had is bad enough that I would call it bucking, I guess I would say they are just surges in power when I give it the beans. I've mostly just assumed these are probably quick changes in valve timing that, while they have gotten better as the tune has progressed, I would guess will probably always be there to some degree just due to the nature of this engine.

Before my truck was tuned though a couple of times it randomly had some pretty nasty audible engine knock and fell on it's face under partial throttle. It only happened a couple of times and I never could replicate it to figure out what conditions caused it. It hasn't done it since being tuned so I've kind of shrugged it off.

I'm sorry but the flywheel mass is NOT the only factor in play. The tune most certainly does make a huge difference in how fast this engine revs. Stock, you'd have to pretty much punch it to get reasonable response (even when stopped/clutch in). Since OV worked his magic however, a quick shot of throttle gets you a quick rise in RPM under those same circumstances. The trick for OV, is to make sure this also happens every time you have the clutch in (ie blipping for a downshift). My flywheel hasn't changed BTW.

My stock tuned truck... I am finally experiencing the bucking and stuff everyone complains about... I used to think I just wasn't shifting right, but this thing it's a real pita to drive.

For anyone looking, URD makes both a lightweight and a heavyweight flywheel for the 2nd gen 4.0 but only a heavyweight flywheel for the 3rd gen 3.5 at this time.

Don’t forget they sell a heavy duty clutch for the 3.5 as well.

I am never going to question myself again with this truck. I've never felt so insecure about my driving and shifting abilities until I got this truck LOL. Every single thing I questioned has so far come back to the lousy stock tune or that it's just a Toyota thing.

    Right?

I've said it before, you have to learn a fucked up way to drive stick in these trucks on the stock tune. OVtune has made it normal again.

    quick update...

don't want to turn anyone off....

rolled the 87 tune and, after the 91 it's a bit disappointing. But I'm going to give it at least 1000 miles.

I've also at this point forgotten what stock felt like, so there's that.

It feels like the flat spot right off the line is still there, moreso in the 87 than the 91.

Is anyone with the tune running on 87 octane?

I plan on staying with 87... any opinions?

    EDIT:
just noticed @Reluctanse posted about it above me. Any others who ran 87 tune?

I will put a more thorough write-up together on it after a couple tanks have been ran through, give me at least another week or two and I'll give it a good assessment. Butt-dyno is really disappointed after the 91 tune :) but if anything that should be a testament to how good the 91 is! 87 is what it is I think, a drivability improvement. I would like to see rev hang eliminated still, so here's to hoping.
