I'm hoping to get this tune sooner or later. I pull off of a back road onto route 6 in CT every morning. Last week I had a pretty short window of opportunity to pull out before getting stuck waiting for a ton of cars to go by. I pretty much had the car floored in first gear pulling out, and the damn thing bogged down and went no where for 1-2 seconds. Wasn't cool at all. Another 2 seconds and I could have caused an accident.

That dangerous as fuck bog off the line is gone with the tune. If I floored mine in the situation you describe, the traction control would be having fits trying to stop wheelspin. That's not an exaggeration.

87 appears to be "breaking in" a bit now I've got a few hundred miles on it.

3300 rpm "turbo boost" is back with a vengeance for sure. Hole shot bog still seems present although less than stock/1.02C was, but more there than with the 91?

MPG seems about stock, but I'm driving it harder too so hard to say for sure. Have a 200 mile round trip I'm making Friday that I drive a lot that will be telling with how I do on milage, will report back.

    Rev hang still sucks....

First 290 miles with the tune, 20.1 mpg. Pretty much inline with what I had before but it’s been driven harder over those miles. I’ve got another 300 or so to do the next two days of purely interstate driving so we’ll see what that does. I feel comfortable saying there hasn’t been a decrease in fuel economy. After I get a few more tanks through it I’ll have more details. 20 mpg still is pretty good considering winter gas sucks

Very good. Lots of annoying nuances that I've found with the truck, that aren't present on most manual transmission vehicles.

I will say, I've learned to adapt with reving at 1st, for a non jerky start, along with reving in between gears for smoother transitions (smooth enough to not notice gear change).

I usually rematch when I down shift to have engine breaking to save brakes, so to hear that it's improved is nice...

Now, to get myself to pay $800 for this tunr e when I've adapted my driving style to the 3rd gens weird quirks is going to be a tough one.

While I appreciate the tune, is really have to see if its night and day.

I just changed my truck to 17" trd pro wheels and 265/70/17 bfg ko2, and noticed drop in mpg and get up and go, which was to be expected. Not sure how you guys like 275, 285s etc. Freaking ridiculous, all for looks, unless you regear.

Maybe I'll swing by the shop in San Marcos and talk with Matt. $800 is a lot of gas for road trips, etc.

Are you guys seeing any loss in mpg from the tq/hp gains from the tune in 87?

some of us run E tires in stock size: 265/65-17. if you like performance, then the stock size is for you. i am quicker than every truck with 265/70-17 simply from my rolling diameter. added heavier E tires, flashed the tune, got more power and driveability, got more mileage too. i run the 91oct 1.03MT file currently.

I'm running a the 87 tune currently. No loss in mileage that I can see. Less power for sure. With the 91 tune I feel no need to regear. With the 87 tune, the truck feels heavier with the 285's I am running. I am concerned about regearing to 4.88 because it's not that much different from 4.30's.

Wow thats good to hear, except the fact you have to run 91 :/

E tires aren't necessary for the offroading I do, and keeping weight to a minimum.

I'd need to flash my truck somehow as a sampler to see if it's worth it... is there some trial ? :)

    Tell you what..

Go over there and offer your truck for M/T dyno/development testing. Perhaps then you'll get a "free" or discounted tune.

C'mon man, take one for the team :D

E tires aren't "necessary" for me either, but they are my preference 100% and that ain't about to go changing. and I'm 99% on road. DFW, y'know..

At least part of it is this is where the engine was programmed originally to switch between atkinson and otto cycles during 'normal' load scenarios. Im pretty sure it was programmed so when you start the truck it will run up to 3k ish in atkinson cycle mode for fuel economy and then after about 32 or 33 it switches over to Otto cycle for full power. Whether there is a mechanical thing in the intake run or something to do with the shape of the intake manifold that contributes to the 3500 rpm surge I am not sure, but a portion of it is software-based. Im not sure if OV has done any experimenting or if its possible to change the point where the engine switches from atkinson to otto but thats where I would look for getting rid of some of the surge. Perhaps if the switchover point could be made a little lower like 2700 rpm then it wouldnt be as noticeable since then youd really only use atkinson for cruising anyway
