My 2 pennies .If anyone is looking to get the tune in hopes to gain a few horses to be quicker..don't bother. It doesn't add jaw dropping horsepower. Power is however more linear and more pronounced in the mid range rpms.

For me the truck feels more raw..not so much filtered power.. Its no beast still, but you can definitely drive it fast. It also allow to be driven smoother. Helped me to smooth out gear engagements. Wished the gas pedal was more direct and Lag and rev hang was non existent. Im not sure if these can be wrinkled out but if so, I think this would make the tune complete.

Is it worth 8 bills? On a very cold day when my Wanda is running effortlessly...YES.

I would like to add a better breathing exhaust to see if it does anything. And also an intake system to hear it growl. Yes I am immature.

Thank you for your honesty. How about mpg's (same, worse, or better)? I'm on the bubble...

I’m seeing the same or better. I got mine right as everywhere switched to winter blend fuel so it’s hard to say exactly how much it’s changed. I’m still averaging about 20 mpg.

    @OVTune

I'm a ford guy who's been lurking the 2016+ tacos for 2 years now because my f150's don't fit in my garage and was looking for a smaller truck. I'm rocking a 2017 focus st with 500 whp that I run on e50 fuel (Self mixed) and currently do my own tuning for it with cobb. I've gone ahead and ordered a 2018 tacoma TRD offroad 4x4 manual and I saw in a previous post you had mentioned that toyota cannot tell it's been flashed, however isn't engine runtime logged? What would happen if you had 50,000 miles on your tacoma and it had a blown engine or something and they were to check the engine hours and it was signifanctly further away than what a tacoma with 50k miles should have, would that raise suspicious? I know absolutely nothing about toyota's ecu data so I was curious.

*edit found this on youtube from dylan* "The ONLY thing that they can see is “miles since DTC reset” which rests when you flash. It also resets when you disconnect the battery. There is no “flash counter”. There is no way of seeing it. And you can go back to stock in 5 minutes or less!"

So I take it engine run time doesn't exist?

Seems like you did a lot of research on the tacoma already so I wanted to ask, with this 3.5 11.8 CR, how far are we away from MBT? Is the different between 87 and 91 distinguishable? You spent a lot of time dialing in VCT, which means that will impact overall spark, so did you have to remove timing on 87 after adjusting intake and exhaust cams? I'm wondering if it's worth developing an 87 calibration as opposed to 91 as I have no interest in 91+. I'd be interested in a re-map of 87 or e85. The D4-S should have plenty of fuel pressure for e85. Do these vehicles have the ability to fit an aftermarket flex fuel sensor like the frs (visconti) since it's using the D4-S? I'm a pretty big ethanol fan if the gains are even worth it compared to 87 depending on how well the motor responds to spark.

TLDR version, is an 87 tune worth it over stock? If so, would you make an 87 version of your calibration and post dyno results overlayed vs stock? If an 87 reflash is worth it over stock, what kinda of gains over the curve and peak?

That's a pretty strong endorsement, but I definitely don't feel the stock truck is so bad it's worth trading lol. In fact, I don't really think it's very bad at all. Just takes some getting used to. TW will convince anyone that the trucks aren't good without mods when realistically they remain some of the best vehicles you can buy.

Based on the information in this thread, I don't think the dyno results will convince you this tune is worth the $800. It seems to be a general "drivability" improvement. Which IMO is exactly what the truck needs. If you're solely looking for big power increases, you'll likely be disappointed.

Please post your thoughts on the tune once you get it. I think a lot of people are still on the fence about the benefits and every opinion is helpful.

the drivability and responsiveness are what this tune is all about. The numbers are really irrelevant because really what you are getting is some small gains while making the power much more useable. The truck pulls much better in the low and mid range instead of just having all the power at the top end.

I'm going to disagree. The truck by itself is great, but the stock tune is pure shit. I've never questioned my driving abilities to the point of feeling insecure until I got this truck. I constantly questioned myself if I was driving it wrong.
I didn't buy this expecting a performance truck, but I also did not expect it to be this underwhelming.

I told myself I should have gotten the Frontier, but the idea of a 12 year old truck put me off. Not that it's a bad thing, but considering a new model is coming out I decided there was greater value in getting a Tacoma with it's cult like following. I think I did the right thing for myself and now I will be happy again with the tune based on all of these positive comments. My tune gets delivered today so I will be tuning it tomorrow!

that would be called power under the curve :p Another question I'm trying to figure out is if the ecu has a tq limiting strategy by default which would hinder the impact of a high flow filter and free flowing exhaust from picking up all the power it's capable of 10-20 hp due to the ecu restricting tq and closing the throttle or reducing ignition. If so, does the OV tune raise the tq limits? sooo many questions.

I was on the fence myself for a long time constantly following this thread and as @Shellshock mentioned, it's about drivability and responsiveness, not so much performance tuning. Once I understood that and found that people had very positive things to say and all of these "problems" were exactly what I was facing, I was sold.

I will definitly provide feedback at least after a full tank.

Mines coming but not until the 28th. I think I'll be the first to try it on a 2018.

Could be part of the reason OV hasn't broken into any top end gains potentially as well. We shall see but it's definitely worth looking into whether the ecu limits the engine from reaching 100% in some or (hopefully) all scenarios

repeat this over and over and over and over.

all you considering the $800 entry fee and the dyno stuff... read that again.
