    Mostly stuff I built.
I am just over here trying to figure out why some folks are still running 87 octane. My truck runs like shit and gets horrible fuel mileage along with that on 87. I’ll pay the extra at the pump for the smoother running and the 3-4 mpg bump I get from 91-93.

Each of these trucks do seem to have a mind of their own though.

I run 91 on the 87 tune. If I can’t find 91, I’ll run 87e0. Truck definitely likes the better fuels

I'm suffering from similar symptoms, the first couple of days driving 87 1.05 it drove great. Its now starting to drive almost like stock. Are these tunes not permanent?

May be winter. Yet mine is fine other than the usual winter drop in MPG. (across all our cars)

Seriously - please if this is happening, open a help ticket with OVT.

MPG always goes down in winter. This isn't really tune related.

Also this engine requires premium in other chassis, it absolutely runs better on it. Since the base ignition timing (basically the map the ECU defaults to, before corrections) isn't really different than the lexus version which requires premium, the tacoma is always doing some knock correction when you use low octane. The area where knock is the worst is right between 2000 - 2200 rpm.

It's not really enough to damage anything just enough for the ECU to correct it out

Thanks. I actually wrote that MPG drop is winter, not the tune. Not the issue. Here: What about bucking, drive-ability and such people report?

I installed my winter tires yesterday which are 32” in place of the 33” mud tires and removed the spare wheel from the rear swingout and my fuel economy went up. I guess summer/winter can even out this way. Otherwise, yeah the winter fuel economy is bad. Will closed loop control during warmup improve the fuel economy at all? Seems like it takes my truck 20min of driving to really warm up and it just gulps fuel during that time.

Noticed mine gulping a lot of fuel during warmup driving this year too.

Still need to do this as well (tech stream?)

Does running a higher octane fuel really make all the difference with OVT? I've always ran 87 in all my vehicles so I don't know any different.

In the 3rd gen I notice a difference even in the stock tune running 91 over 87

Mat said it can be tuned but it’s not yet available. It’s on the wishlist still for sometime in a future revision

I just went from 87 tune on 91 octane up to 91 tune (still 91 octane), did the value resets, and then went on a 250 mile drive....I can’t tell a difference between the tunes at all. Gimmick.

Unless you were just cruising along at highway speed only, I highly doubt that.

Not sure what there is to doubt? Is it so strange people drive their vehicles? What a fucking bizarre idea. Mix of both.

Who said it was bizarre that people drive their vehicles? I didn't. I said that unless you were just cruising at highway speed, I doubt your statement. :notsure: that's what there is to doubt. To me, there's a huge difference.
